6 x 5 Challenge

The 6 x 5 Challenge is hosted by Mystee at A Moment with Mystee

This is a quarterly challenge.

1st: October 2010 -- 10.10-10.17

2nd: January 2011 -- Exact dates TBA

3rd: April 2011 -- Exact dates TBA

    4th: July 2011 -- Exact dates TBA

                            5th: October 2011 -- Exact dates TBA

During the dates, the goal is to drag out your reading pile and get caught up. Do you have reviews that need to get done? Books that you've really just wanted to sit and read? This is your chance.

Then for at least 5 of the listed dates {don't have to be in a row}, you set your goal to read 6 hours a day. You can post your daily updates on what you're reading and how many hours that you managed each day. Then when the challenge is over, you post up your final results. You do not have to manage to read 5 of the days nor do you have to manage the 6 hours each day, just do what you can. she decided on 5 days and 6 hours to try to make it so it was no pressure all around.

I am going to attempt this challenge!  I was unsuccessful at the 500-page book challenge in May because I just had too much to do for the end of the school year, but I think I can make this one fit in my schedule!  Books and reading dates will be listed later!

500 - page Challenge!

Paula at Tome's Devotee is having a 500-page challenge!  This is what she says:

"Now for the challenge. I hope to have a lot more followers eventually
so that these challenges will become fun, but for now I will be reading
a book with more than 500 pgs in May. Dragonfly in Amber is book
2 in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Book 1 touched me so
very much, that I am looking foward to the next. I didn't get to it in
April, I know I won't be able to get through it by the 30th, so I
am making it my May Challenge. If you stumble onto this and would
like to join just link back to this post so others can join too, pick a
book that's 500 pgs or more and tell me what you're reading.
Feel free to copy the image to post on your blog if you'd like as well ; )"

I have not chosen my book yet - but I will be blogging about it here when I do!

Fangtastic Fiction Challenge 2010

Despite what some might think, there is more to vampire fiction than Dracula, Interview With The Vampire and Twilight, and so, with a little help from Pam @ Bookalicio.us, I am hosting a vampire reading challenge!
Oh, and do forgive the puns.
Challenge Levels/Goals

The base challenge here (“Newly Turned”) is to read four books, one from each of the four categories below: classic, horror, romance and young adult. If a book can fit into two categories (or more), simply pick one category and then read another.

Once you have completed that, you can go wild with what books you read for your challenge list, so long as they have vampires in some form as a prominent part. For every additional four books you read, you go up a level. Where the base challenge is the equivalent of the first stages of a vampire, think of each four books as a century added onto their existence.

How old can you go?

First Blood
This is the category for vampire tales that were written prior to 1900. Examples of such books would be:
•Dracula – Bram Stoker

•Carmilla – Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Things That Go Bite In The Night
This is the category for works firmly entrenched in the horror genre. Examples of such books would be:
•Salem’s Lot – Steven King
•Let The Right One In – John Ajvide Lindqvist

Kiss Of The Vampire
This is the category for all books that have romance as one of its main genres/focusses. Examples of such books would be:
•Dead Until Dark (etc) – Charlaine Harris
•Jessica’s Guide To Dating On The Dark Side – Beth Fantaske
High School Is Hell

This is the category for all vampire books that fit in the young adult category. Examples of such books would be:
•The Vampire Diaries – L.J. Smith
•The Morganville Vampires – Rachel Caine

Bonus Challenge/Activity: Screams On Screen

As a bonus challenge/activity, why not take in vampires on the large and small screens as well? Keep track of how many movies or TV seasons you watch, whether it’s Buffy, True Blood or The Vampire Diaries on your TV, or Lost Boys, Underworld or any film adaptation of a vampire novel, and see how many you can total up during the year!

Other Information
This challenge runs the entire length of 2010, so from January 1 to December 31.

Fangtastic Fiction Challenge 2010

These are the four catagories: classic, horror, romance and young adult.
These are my Fangtastic Fiction Challenge picks:

Classic:  Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (reading this on-line)

Amazon Product Description

The vampire novella "Carmilla" set in Austria is one of Le Fanu's best tales and greatly influenced Bram Stocker, who published Dracula 25 years later. This is definitively a great book and a must for the lovers of horror tales.

Horror:  Already Dead by Charles Huston
From Bookmarks Magazine
Already Dead is not for the squeamish. Even so, it surprised even critics who had never thought themselves fans of Count Dracula. Huston portrays a noirish, gritty, alter-Manhattan world, with political rivalries comprised of all sorts of vampires, even "revolutionary" gay and lesbian ones. The terse, hard-boiled prose and characters contain shades of Raymond Chandler, Hunter S. Thompson, and Quentin Tarantino, but are wholly original. Despite the novel’s sophistication, it’s not for everyone. "Huston deserves hardcover publication and will get it soon enough, but it’s probably true that this book’s core audience is among the young, the cool, the hip, and the unshockable" (Washington Post).

Romance: Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris - - - finished reading 6/14/2010

Amazon Product Description:

The #1 New York Times bestselling Sookie Stackhouse series- the basis for HBO(r)'s True Blood-continues!
After enduring torture and the loss of loved ones during the brief but deadly Faery War, Sookie Stackhouse is hurt and she's angry. Just about the only bright spot in her life is the love she thinks she feels for vampire Eric Northman. But he's under scrutiny by the new Vampire King because of their relationship. And as the political implications of the Shifters coming out are beginning to be felt, Sookie's connection to the Shreveport pack draws her into the debate. Worst of all, though the door to Faery has been closed, there are still some Fae on the human side-and one of them is angry at Sookie. Very, very angry...

Young Adult:  Dead is the New Black by Marlene Perez

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—Nightshade, CA, is downright strange and full of the unexpected. When the girl-to-be, cheerleader Samantha Devereaux, begins the school year with a completely new look, Daisy Giordano gets suspicious. The fact that Samantha appears dead doesn't seem to bother anyone, and before long looking dead becomes the rage. Being dead takes on a whole new meaning when a girl is mysterious attacked and turns up in the morgue, and other cheerleaders are stricken with seizures. Daisy and her psychic sisters get to work investigating the goings-on and learn that the culprit is really a vampire, and Daisy is determined to get to the bottom of things. This is the witty and humorous first installment in a series; it provides romance, mystery, friendship, adventure, and the supernatural all rolled up in a fast-paced, plot-twisting story. Readers will identify with Daisy and her struggle to accept and appreciate who she really is and what she has to offer. The slapstick humor and tough attitudes mixed with the occult make this an entertaining choice for teen libraries.—Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY

Awesome Authors Challenge 2010

Alyce from At Home with Books is hosting this challenge! The concept and rules are below:
Welcome to the Awesome Author Challenge!
The idea behind this challenge is to read works by authors who have been recommended to you time and again, but you haven't gotten around to reading them yet. These are the authors that everyone else tells you are awesome, thus the "Awesome Author Challenge" title.

The Rules:
The challenge starts January 1, 2010 and ends December 31, 2010.
Crossover from other challenges is allowed.
Choose the level at which you would like to participate, post about it and come back and leave a link to your post in Mister Linky.
Titles and authors do not have to be predetermined, and can change at any time.
Books can come from any genre or reading level, the only requirement is that you have heard great things about the author, but haven't yet read any of their works.

The Levels:
Easy: Choose three authors and read at least one title from each author.
Moderate: Choose six authors and read at least one title from each author.
Challenging: Choose ten authors and read at least one title from each author.
Over-Achieving: Anything over ten authors.

Post links to your reviews on the review posts: Jan/Feb, March/April.
Please leave a direct link to your challenge post in Mister Linky.

I am planning to sign up at the easy level - commit to only three authors.  That way I can be successful at the challenge and read additonal books and authors if time allows.

Random Reading Activity Challenge

If you participated in or heard about the Holiday Break Reading Challenge and the Spring Break Reading Challenge you won't have any trouble catching on to what is going on at this site. Karin found she enjoyed hosting the challenge actvities and prize giveaways so much that she decided to set up a way for her to do it all during the year. So here is what she'll do:

•RANDOMLY, she'll post an activity challenge. You might want to look at some of the ones she did during the Holiday Break Reading Challenge and the Spring Break Reading Challenge for an idea of what to expect.

•You'll have a SPECIFIC amount of time to complete the activity.

•You'll post something on your blog with your completed activity challenge and come back to this site and link your blog post to MR. LINKY. (If, for some reason, there isn't a Mr. Linky available then just leave the link to your post in the comment section. Mr. Linky seems to be down as she's creating this post.)

•After the time period to complete the activity is up, she'll RANDOMLY choose a winner from the people on Mr. Linky.

  • She'll post the winner and ask them to email her with their mailing address and prize choice. (Some challenges will be for SPECIFIC prizes, like this one.)

•YOU'LL WANT TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE BLOG BY EMAIL OR RSS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF THE RANDOM ACTIVITY CHALLENGES.

So, are you ready for the first activity challenge? This is an easy one. The winner will receive YOU by Charles Benoit. It won't be available for purchase until August 24, 2010.

Spring Break Reading Challenge

Spring Break Reading Challenge #3 -
1. Title and author of the book you are reading.
2. Include the cover of the book.
3. Synopsis
4. What do you think about the book so far?
5. Does the author have a website or blog? If so, insert a link in your post.

Be sure to link to your direct post using Mr. Linky in order to be eligible for the book giveaway.

I am reading The Crossroads Cafe by Deborah Smith

Synopsis from Amazon:  "Cathy is on top of the world--beautiful, rich, a top movie star about to launch a new career as a cosmetics queen--when an unscrupulous photographer in search of a story causes her car to crash and burn, destroying her perfect body as well as her career and sending her scurrying for a place to hide her scars. Thomas, on the other hand, is still mourning the deaths of his wife and young son in the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center and is slowly drinking himself to death while sleeping in the bed of his truck in an isolated hamlet in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. Together, however, they find they are stronger and better people, and they begin to take an active interest in the mountain community that has taken them both into their hearts, and into their kitchens."

So far I love this book.  I am reading it on the Kindle (my first ever Kindle book) and am very impressed, both with the Kindle and the story.  The author creates amazing characters - both human and animal.  I find myself not wanting to put the Kindle down.  The lives of those characters are well constructed.  I love the strong women and the references to the ideals and things in life that the people in the Crossroads charish.   I know that when I finish this story I will be looking for more books by Deborah Smith.  You can click on her name above and go to her website.

The Challenge runs March 12 - March 21, 2010.  Goals....that is the topic today.  Wow - this should be easy, but I don't want to be unrealistic and set some lofty "will read so many books" goal - because I realize that what I lack more than anything is time.  So, with that in mind...

My goal:
Simply to take the time to read EVERY day: before 10:00 pm. I usually end up taking time from the night (between midnight and 3 am) when I really should be sleeping.
