Death’s Daughter: Realm Walker Series: Book 2
Kathleen Collins

Genre: urban fantasy, paranormal romance
Publisher: Carina press
Word Count:  68,000

Book Description:
Juliana Norris, Realm Walker with the Agency, is an Altered. A fact that she runs up against every time she’s forced to work with human police officers, and their species-ist commissioner, on cases they can’t solve themselves. Which happens more than they would like to admit.

Her gift—the quality that makes her the best Realm Walker in the business, without boast—is the ability to read magical signatures. Whether the gift came from her father, the dark fae god of death, or the mage mother she can’t remember, is anyone’s guess. And when Altered children start going missing with only wild magical signatures as clues, her heritage is the last thing on her mind.

She can’t afford such distractions, and she definitely can’t afford to worry about the fact that her mate, master vampire Thomas Kendrick, hasn’t spoken to her since she saved him from a demon—maybe it’s because she had to stab him to do so. Because whoever is kidnapping these children must be very powerful to wield wild magic. Very powerful, and very dangerous indeed.

My thoughts:
I love this series.  I think the characters are incredible and the story is wonderful.  I was hooked by the short story, completely in with book one and in love by book two.  I couldn't seem to read them fast enough.
The author is a true storyteller.  She has created characters that you want to know and/or be, set them in a vividly created world and paced their lives in a way that keeps the pages turning.  I am thrilled to have found Kathleen Collins and can't wait to read more.

My thoughts:

I couldn't seem to read this fast enough.  I was hooked by the short story, The Making of Michael Bishop, and read that and  Realm Walker in one sitting.  The characters are incredible.  The author has built characters that are realistic while being larger than life.  She has created the kinds of people the reader can relate to, invest in, find in someone close to them or desire to be.
The story is wonderfully paced, intriguing and entertaining.  It twists and turns taking the read on an emotionally charged roller coaster ride.  I enjoyed learning more and more about the characters, their pasts and their relationships as the story progressed.
I was thrilled that I had book 2, Death's Daughter, because I started reading it as soon as I finished this one.

This little story is only 20 pages long, but I was hooked from the start and sad when I ran out of pages.  It is the perfect read to get a feel for Kathleen Collins writing style and set you up to want to read MORE from this author.

The Hunted Wizard

When Nicole dabbled in the occult, she lost it all: Her voice, her family, and her name. Now on the run from the Inquisition, she must prove to herself—and the world—that not all wizards are too dangerous to let live.

The savage murder of a bookstore employee throws Nicole into the middle of Inquisition business, like it or not. Driven by her inability to save the young man’s life, she decides to hunt the killer on her own. Using forbidden magic to investigate the past, she learns that the murderer is in fact a disease that could kill the entire werewolf race.

Forced to choose between saving lives and preserving her own, Nicole embraces the magic that sent her into exile. Without werewolves, the power of the Inquisition would dwindle, and she could live without being hunted.

Nicole’s only hope for success lies in the hands of the werewolves she hates and the Inquisition she fears, but finding someone to trust is only the beginning of her problems. There are those who want to ensure that the werewolves go extinct and that the Inquisition falls.

But, if she fails to find a cure, her family—including her twin sister—will perish…

EXCERPT

Almost everyone in the store had a phone. Dormant devices, from reading lights to mobile chargers, littered the tables. One woman, browsing books nearby, had four battery-powered devices in her purse. One was a phone, and like mine, it hungered. Its need was strong; its battery waned to the point of failure.

If I wanted, I could charge it for her.

No one would notice if I did. Maybe the woman would wonder how her phone hadn’t died before she got home. It only had a few minutes left. It’d take me all of ten seconds to fix it for her. If I did, I wouldn’t be so aware of it. But to do so, I’d have to touch her—or her phone. Some things I could manipulate without having a direct conduit, but cell phone batteries were tricky, greedy things.

I cringed a little, setting the thriller book down. I picked up the next nearest title. I flipped it over, not reading the text on the back. Did I dare? Out of the corner of my eye, I watched the woman browsing through the books. All it would take was a few seconds. I could charge it without her noticing.

That was one thing I was actually good at.

I put the novel I held down and wandered to the same table, careful not to look at her. Book by book, I investigated the titles, circling to where she stood.

“You’re Nicole Thomas, aren’t you? The actress. You’re her.” My quarry appraised me with a pleased expression.

People normally recognized the mainliners, people with beautiful faces and voices to match, people who didn’t avoid crowds.

In short, people other than me.

I met her gaze, abandoning my perusal of novels. “I am,” I replied, wincing a little at the sandpaper-rough quality of my voice. At least I hadn’t been reduced to a whisper—yet. My fatal flaw was my rough, grating voice. Chronic laryngitis did that to a person. It ruined careers, as it had mine, though I hadn’t quite given up on being an actress. I’d already lost the ability to sing.

I wasn’t going to let a stupid disease take everything away from me.

The woman smiled, not seeming to mind talking to someone who sounded more like a zombie than a human. “You’re taller than I expected. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

She thrust out her hand.

We shook.

I left her phone alone.

“They keep putting me next to giants,” I quipped. It was true. When I did manage to get on the silver screen, I worked alongside actors easily a foot-and-a-half taller than me. “It’s a pleasure to meet you too.” I matched her smile. She didn’t tell me her name, and I didn’t ask for it.

It took all of my will not to fiddle with her phone. All it would take was a murmured word and a thought, and it’d be done. It would have been easy to charge the battery when our hands had been clasped together, but I hadn’t dared.

If, sometime later, she noticed her phone had magically been charged—literally—she might remember me. She knew my name.

And in true cowardice, I couldn’t bring myself to help her. If she connected the strange behavior of her phone with me, she might tell someone. If she did, I’d be as good as dead—or worse. I had dabbled in the occult, and the occult had dabbled back, and there were those who didn’t like when that happened.

The last thing I needed was them finding me.

Blog Tour: Black Moon Draw by Lizzy Ford

Welcome to The Wormhole and my stop on the tour.
It is my pleasure to feature Lizzy Ford and Black Moon Draw.

Award Winning author, Lizzy Ford, is back with a fantastical novel, BLACK MOON DRAW, where we find out what happens when a reader gets sucked into the novel she’s reading.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Lizzy has stopped by for an interview:

* When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was about nine years old. I’ve always known I had a calling, and I figured it out at nine that it was to become a writer!

* What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I’m known for a couple!

First, I write super fast. When I’m not distracted by social media, I can write about two novels a month (up to 200k words.) When distracted my social media/life, I can write a novel in about three weeks!

Second, I also work on multiple projects at once. So if I have time to write 100k words, I’ll divide it among projects slated to be published and the projects I write just for fun (that’ll probably never see the light of day haha!)

* Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?

I don’t really know. It’s hard to explain. I once wrote a post about how my process is what I call intuitive writing, in that, I don’t dictate what I write, what direction the story goes in, the characters, etc. I simply write, and wherever the story goes, it goes. I do sometimes build characters around neat or intriguing traits (both physical and intellectual) I find in people around me. Otherwise, I just let the Muses do their work!

* What books have most influenced your life?

Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” taught me that flawed characters are better than non-flawed ones. It’s a seemingly simple lesson, but up until then, I had this weird fixation with creating the perfect character. After reading P&P I realized I didn’t have to have perfect characters, that what makes them relatable and strong are their faults.

* What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I don’t have a lot of down time. I travel with my husband whenever he goes to conferences, so that’s always really cool. I play with my animals, hang out with my sister and husband, watch cancelled TV series, go for walks.

* What is your favorite comfort food?

I have a weakness for bakery quality pastries, baked goods and chocolate. I love honey – alone, in tea, on anything! I also love crockpot cooked meat, roasted vegetables, anything my mom cooks … I’m a total foodie. I’m always up for trying new foods and local cuisine when I travel!

* What do you think makes a good story?

Relatable characters. Most of the times, it’s the characters people love, though sometimes, they fall in love with the worlds. I love reading epic fantasy, because I love disappearing into a new world and learning all about it and how it’s different.

* Who would you consider your favorite author and why?

Fun random questions:
• dogs or cats?

Dogs!

• Coffee or tea?

Coffee in the morning, tea the rest of the day!

• Dark or milk chocolate?

When watching my weight, dark. Otherwise, milk!

• Rocks or flowers?

Both!

• Night or day?

Day

• Favorite color?

Pink-teal-purple

• Crayons or markers?

Crayons

• Pens or pencils?

Pencils

An American novelist from Burbank, California, Allie Burke writes books she can’t find in the bookstore. Allie has stopped by for an interview:

? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Sometime in 2010, during my introduction to the YA fandom. I sought a mature book featuring the paranormal elements of a YA novel, and I couldn’t find it. So I wrote it instead.

? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
I was on my sixth job when I started writing.

? How long does it take you to write a book?
It depends what book it is. I’ve written a book in six weeks, written a book in three years, and everywhere in between.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
I pace in my office, with music playing, mumbling to myself—in an effort to figure out what I’m doing mid-sentence.

? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
From the most diverse people I can find.

? How do you decide what you want to write about?
It really depends on what characters I can visualize. If I see the characters of one book versus the desire of writing the other book just because I want to finish it, I’ll write about who I can see right in front of me.

? What books have most influenced your life?
The Rum Diary, Garden Spells, The Russian Concubine, On the Road, The Old Man in the Sea, Code Name Verity, The Fault in Our Stars, Memoirs Aren’t Fairytales, Slaughterhouse Five, Everybody Sees the Ants, The City & the City, The Red Scarf, …well. I read a lot of books.

? What are you reading right now?
Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris.

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I like to paint on walls. And I draw people with charcoal sometimes.

? What is your favorite comfort food?
Coffee?

? What do you think makes a good story?
True characters that are genuinely good people and make intelligent decisions.

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
Marni Mann, because she never holds anything back.

Blog Tour: Highland Moon Rising: Cry Wolf by Sarah Makela

Highland Moon Rising (Cry Wolf, Book 4)
Sarah Mäkelä

Genre: New Adult Shifter Romance
Publisher: Kissa Press LLC
Date of Publication: October 17, 2014

Book Description:

A kitten in a werewolves’ lair…

A Highland reunion...
After months of trying to rescue her werewolf half-brother Colin who was abducted by evil research scientists, wereleopard Caitlyn has come home to Scotland to console her sibling. But her problems are far from over...

Red in tooth and claw...
Still heady and wanton from the power of last night’s full moon, Caitlyn is in mortal danger. Werewolves have little respect for other shifters, and she’s trapped and caged at the Scottish Pack's HQ and at the mercy of Alistair—the vicious wolf who fathered Colin and abused her mother, and who’s capable of murder…

The sweet smell of arousal...
Her scent can save her, or kill her. Dougal, the Pack’s new Alpha, hungers to strip her naked and satiate his fiery lunar lust. But he also senses this beautiful feline with clover-green eyes that shine through the bars of her prison with burning desire is nearing the end of her strength. Will he deny his dominance, and the moon’s lingering power, to be the protector she needs?

Excerpt:

Hinges squeaked on a door that hadn’t seen use in several months. Months I’d spent struggling to rescue my younger brother. My attempts had been in vain. Not only had the scientists who’d captured him discovered my existence and fervently chased me, but no matter what I’d tried, their research facility had been nearly impenetrable for a lone wereleopard. The tall fences and heavy-duty searchlights would have been challenge enough, but the plentiful armed guards that crisscrossed the compound had made it impossible to proceed.
Fortunately, the werewolf Pack he’d transferred to had broken him—and the other shifters—free with their numbers and brute strength. However, I could only wonder how Colin had fared after all he’d been through. From the brief phone call we’d shared yesterday, I barely recognized him. He didn’t sound at all like the easygoing guy I’d known. He was weary and solemn.
But that was understandable. Whatever had been done had changed him and his beast.
With each minute, hour, day, I neared the brink of complete exhaustion. Sooner than later, I needed to rest up. The scientists had stayed so close on my tail for so long that I remained vigilant at all times. It was so hard to let my guard down.
While I was in Scotland to support Colin, I craved the comfort of home and the ability to run in my feline form without having to keep constant watch over my shoulder. Och, to feel the lush grass and dried leaves beneath my padded feet and to smell the forest air mixing and lingering with the soft undertones of early morning rain. My beast stretched lazily inside my chest, eager to unsheathe her claws and return to nature. But there was no luxury for that yet.
Colin would be arriving back any day now, and I wanted to clean the place up before his return. His absence had made the house a dusty mess. However, this provided me with a temporary place to stay, since I’d given up my flat and the majority of my belongings shortly after he’d gone missing.
Now that he was safe, I looked forward to rebuilding my life and getting back into a comfortable routine.
Tossing my duffel bag on the floor, I took a deep breath, trying to push aside the stress weighing on me. My brother’s scent still lingered in the air after all this time. However, I wasn’t alone. Another musky smell—of a wild beast—urged me deeper into the apartment, calling to me from just out of reach.
As far as I knew, Colin wasn’t expecting company.
A loose floorboard groaned behind me. I spun around, slinging my fist at the intruder as instinct took over. But the hulking man looming over me easily dodged my punch and landed a hard kick to my outer thigh. I stumbled into the living room’s leather armchair but jerked back to my feet, quickly regaining my balance. My cat-like reflexes suffered from being so bone-weary, but I needed to persevere.
Sucking in a deep breath, I scented my attacker’s lupine odor and my blood chilled. Shite.
Werewolves weren’t exactly fans of other shifters, especially felines. The dog and cat politics between us were as hairy as our domestic counterparts’ at times.
“What are you doing here, kitty?” The man snarled the words, sounding every bit the hungry wolf. Dark brown hair swept across his forehead, and he brushed it back with the swipe of his meaty hand. He stalked closer, invading my personal space. I didn’t dare to move away and show weakness.
Questions raced through my head. Who was he? Should I answer him? Something about him seemed familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Keep the secret safe.
He slid his blue-eyed gaze down my body, pointedly lingering on my curves. His momentary distraction was exactly what I needed to attack.
I leapt into the air, slamming both feet against his chest to knock him down in a fierce hit. My plan nearly succeeded—even if his massive chest was as solid as a brick wall—but he grabbed my ankle at the last minute, dragging me down with him. I twisted, struggling to land on my feet. Unlike my feline counterpart, I wasn’t that agile. Not with a werewolf holding onto me.
Air burst from my lungs as I smacked the floor with bone-rattling force. I gasped, struggling for each breath after the hard blow. A gentle gust of wind made the open front door creak a little. My gaze rose to the lush green outdoors. If I could just make it there, then I could outrun this wolf. Leopards were quicker, so I’d be safe from him.
Shame forced its way inside my chest. My life had become one giant race. Constantly running from one problem to another. That wasn’t me. The fact this wolf had even managed to gain an advantage over me showed just how desperately I needed to rest. If I were at the top of my game, he would be running from me.

Blog Tour: Hunting Desire by C.M. Dahl

Welcome to The Wormhole and my stop on the tour.
It is my pleasure to feature C.M. Dahl and Hunting Desire.

C.M. Dahl

C.M. Dahl has been writing romances since she was eight years old and wrote the story of forbidden love between a stuffed crocodile and a plastic doll in pink magic marker. The crocodile helped the doll cross a dangerous puddle in the backyard and earned the doll's respect. They fell in love after fighting off a legion of green army men.

Her storytelling and her writing tools have grown more sophisticated over the years, but her love for romance has only deepened. She loves writing strong, capable men and women, who have a burning hot attraction between them, learn to respect each other, and fall in love, all while fighting evil and saving the world, of course!

Currently, C.M. writes paranormal romances in the Shattered City series, including Hunting Desire (October 2014), Demon's Dance (November 2014), and Ian & Lilith's story (December 2014). Paranormal Romance

Date Published: October 23, 2014

Gavin Kincaid and the other Guardians have protected the Shattered City for centuries. But now he faces the one threat even his werewolf strength can't overcome alone: demons are attacking the city from within. His superior calls in elite Hell Hunter Nerine.

Gavin doesn't want outside help. But to his shock, he discovers he wants the beautiful tracker like no other woman he's ever met.

Nerine carries a secret that might just kill her. To protect it, she keeps everyone at arm's length, but her desire for Gavin may make that impossible.

Together, they fight the demons determined to destroy the Shattered City and seize the powerful, mysterious artifacts it holds, until a hidden enemy strikes. Now Nerine must face the demons within her to save Gavin, the city...and the world.

My thoughts:
Great story.  Fantastic characters.  I was intrigued by the beginning and couldn't put the book down by the time I met Nerine.  I fell in love with the characters and was truly thrilled with the originality.  The prejudice against the species was a wonderful play on our own tragic world.  It would be amazing if "real"people could see others for who they are and not judge based on bias.
I enjoyed every page; the growing respect and relationship between Gavin and Nerine was incredible to witness.
The writing is creative, original and clever.  The wording is chosen to bring the reader vivid pictures that run like a movie in the mind while the pages seem to turn themselves.  The story is well paced and entertaining.  The characters are carefully built with a depth that was unexpected.
I can't wait for the next book in the Shattered City series.
