Saved by the angel sent to kill them, four half-angel boys are trained and employed as Heaven’s assassins. Jarrid and his nephilim brothers are raised as members of The Eternal Order, and must enforce Heaven’s laws by hunting down those who defy the Directorate.

His only shot at freedom is Ascension, but his employers won’t permit the ancient ritual. Then Jarrid learns a Renegade angel is in Detroit. Such a high-level takedown is the answer to his prayers—all the leverage he needs to Ascend.

For freedom, Jarrid is willing to do anything to lure his elusive enemy out of hiding.

Even use an innocent woman as bait.

News reporter Ionie Gifford has no clue an angel outlaw wants her dead. She agrees to help Jarrid, the enigmatic nephilim with penetrating silver eyes and a worship-worthy body, but only because he accepts her terms. He’s her all-access pass into the city’s supernatural underworld where she hopes to locate her mother’s killer.

Blindsided by Ionie's beauty and tenacity, Jarrid soon finds the eternity-old glacier around his heart thawing. With duty and desire at war within him, he’s forced to make a choice—either save Ionie from the trap he snared and stay chained to Heaven, or allow her to become collateral damage.

Excerpt:
I can handle this. I have to handle this! A dream is a dream after all; no matter if she thought she was going to work. No matter if she wondered at her sanity. So she decided to crack one eye open at a time.
Piece by piece, the man in front of her appeared.
He grinned. “Quite handsome, aren’t I?”
Her eyes popped open. Handsome? Extremely! His black hair was tousled, his startling light blue eyes merry, his chiseled face astounding.
“No,” she said automatically and buried her head again.
“Oh.” He plunked down beside her. “’Tis a thing sometimes, the shock of my good appearance.”
Mildred breathed deeply and hid her grin. Arrogant. But she couldn’t help but enjoy this dream. It was the first of its kind. She peeked out from beneath her arm and said, “You’re awfully full of yourself.”
“Nay.” He looked ahead and shook his head. “I stopped being that way years ago.”
Still from beneath her arm. “Being full of yourself?”
“Aye.” He leaned back and stretched out his legs. “Turns out the lassies dinnae like it.”
Mildred lifted her head slightly. “Why not? I find it rather becoming.”
“You would.”
“I would?”
“Of course.”
“Why is that?”
“Because you’re arrogant too.”
She sat up straighter. “Am not.”
“Are too.” He titled back his head. “Do you feel that?”
“What?” But she already did. A cool wind blew through the forest and brushed her cheek. For the first time since she’d arrived, Mildred looked around. There existed no steel mill looming in the distance waiting for her to make parts for planes created for war. There existed no stream of people trudging into a plant determined to do their job.
Her friends and siblings had vanished.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”
Her eyes darted to the man beside her then back at the forest. “Yes, but I don’t understand.”
Cannae you be happy with what is in front of you?”
She heard his accent and saw the forest and shook her head. “No, I can’t.”
“Too bad.” He jumped to his feet and held down his hand. “M’lady.”
Mildred looked up, still barely familiar with everything and shook her head. “No.”
He ignored her and pulled her to her feet. Stunned, she looked up…and up. It was then that she truly realized the stature of the man talking to her. With shoulders easily twice as wide as hers, a height at least eight inches taller and a frame rippled with muscles, he was overwhelming.
Her eyes drifted over his face. That face. One she’d dreamed of since she’d been a little girl. Perfectly proportioned, with a straight nose, square chin, and straight brows, it’d always been overly alluring.
And those eyes...like the clearest blue sky sharpened by sunlight.
“Well, what about my attire?”
Her eyes rounded. Yes, his attire was… amazing.
“You’re wearing a…” She glanced away and cinched her lips before looking at him again, brows up. “You’re wearing a skirt.” Mildred paused a minute to get her bearings in front of such a good looking fellow. But things must be said so she gathered her courage and looked him dead in the eye. “Are you aware that you wear a skirt?”
With a shocked look, he peered down and said, “It appears that I am!”
Mildred breathed deeply through her nostrils and nodded solemnly. “So I’m the first to tell you.”
He looked to the sky for guidance then into her eyes. “It seems you are.”
“Well, I’m sorry about that but honestly it’ll get you in trouble, even in my dream.”

Excerpt:

She leaned back and studied him, taking in the casual way his thigh rested against a chair. Her throat closed, smothering her clever retort. Jarrid angled his chiseled face to study items on her desk, and Ionie caught the awed stares of her passing colleagues.
One woman tripped over her own feet.
Another face-planted into a wall.
Jesus Christ.
The half-angel was so handsome it hurt. Jarrid didn’t seem to notice the attention directed at him. Or maybe he didn’t care.
“You’re upset I won’t allow photos, but you still plan to work with me,” he said, his fingers sliding over a shriveled dictionary. “I want to know why.”
Blunt and to the point.
“I’m not upset.” Ionie snorted, a sound she hoped made her seem indifferent. “You’ve answered my prayers. I’m used to working obits, or chasing the occasional fire truck.”
He flicked his head at the desk adjoining hers. “You work with someone?”
“I don’t do partners.”
“Yet you will do me.” The simple statement, spoken in his sexy rumble, liquefied the marrow in Ionie’s bones.
“Uh,” she said. “My work takes on a whole new meaning when you say it.”
He leaned in, a smooth slide of firm muscle and taut flesh. She caught a whiff of his scent; she hadn’t noticed it before. Something nameless, celestial like the man – the being – it belonged to. She inhaled deep, lulled by his nearness. Gorgeous. No other word fit him better.

My thoughts:
Interesting premise.  Well built, interesting characters.  Well developed storyline.  Although angels seem to be the "in" paranormal to write recently, this book is fresh and entertaining.  Captivating!  I can't wait for more Angel Bait books.

About the Author :
For the past fourteen years, Victoria has illustrated and authored Seasons of the Witch calendars and planners for 7th-House.com.

Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of her mind for years. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch, I play rock music and manage one of Houston's premier R & B/Variety/Pop bands.

This series will include some of my actual experience in the paranormal with fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing "metaphysician", but most of the material is fantasy.

My thoughts:
Wow!  Fantastic! The writing is excellent.  The word choice, superb.  I fell in love with the vocabulary, it was so fun to roll around in the words that I didn't realize the pages were turning.  The characters are wonderfully created and the world is interesting and clever.  The story is nicely paced, intriguing, and original.  This book was a true pleasure to read.

Blog Tour: The Dogs of Winter by Bobbie Pyron

Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour for
Bobbie Pyron's The Dogs of Winter.

The Dogs of Winter by Bobbie Pyron
Like thousands of other children in post-Soviet Russian, five-year-old Mishka finds himself trying to survive on the streets of Moscow after his mother disappears and he has no home. Help comes from an unlikely source: a pack a feral street dogs! For two years, Mishka and the dogs protect and love each other, becoming a family in every sense of the word. When Mishka has the chance to rejoin the world of humans, will he want to? Inspired by a true story!
Bobbie has joined us for an interview:
1.      How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?  Although I’d wanted to be a writer since I was about nine or ten years old, my life took a lot of diversions before I got serious about writing. I’ve worked as a wilderness education instructor, dog trainer, bookstore manager, professional singer, and for the last twenty-five years, librarian. I figure it’s all grist for the mill!

2.      How do you decide what you want to write about?  I think for me, it’s more a matter of what finds me, what voice comes to me. At any given time, I can have three or four ideas for stories, but until the narrative voice comes, I can’t write a thing. Most of the things I write about are born out of personal experiences or a particular passion of mine, such as dogs. Sometimes, I read something and it makes the hair rise up on the back of my neck and I think, this would make a great story! That’s what happened with The Dogs of Winter. I read a magazine article about feral children, and it opened with the story of Ivan Mishukov, the real-life Russian boy who inspired my book.

3.      What do you like to do when you’re not writing?  Be outside with my dogs! I need to be out in nature a certain amount most every day. I love hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, and backpacking with my three dogs. I’m very fortunate to live in the mountains in a place that’s surrounded by lots of wilderness.

4.      Who would you consider your favorite author and why?  I have a super crush on Kate DiCamillo. I think she’s an amazing author! If I could write a tenth as wonderfully as she does, I’d be a happy camper. She writes so beautifully and compassionately, with a gentle humor. She writes completely from the heart. In my humble opinion, she can do no wrong.

5.      Coffee or tea? Tea! I have a cup of green tea by my side as I write this. My husband says I’m a tea addict.

6.      Rocks or flowers?  Hmmm…I love them both, but if I had to choose, I’d probably say rocks. They speak to me in a way flowers don’t.
7.      Favorite color?  Purple!
