It is my pleasure to feature: Jennifer Malone Wright and her book:  The Vampire Hunter's Daughter: The Complete Collection.
Author Bio:

Jennifer Malone Wright resides in the beautiful mountains of northern Idaho with her husband and five children. Between the craziness of taking care of her children, whose ages range from fourteen all the way down to six months, and being a homemaker, Jennifer has little time left for herself. The time she does have left, usually leading far into the night, is spent working on freelance work or her beloved fiction.

When she grew up, Jennifer always had her nose in a book. She has been writing stories and poems since grade school. This love of the written word and her strong interest in the paranormal is what has led to her first novel “The Birth of Jaiden.”
In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Jennifer is also a very proud military wife. Moving around the country for the last ten years has made her a bit of a nomad and she finds it difficult to be in one place for too long.

Jennifer is also the author of The Birth of Jaiden, a paranormal novel filled with action, suspense, and even a love story.

Here is an excerpt to get you started!

Drew let me be until snowflakes began to drift down from the sky. “Come on, Chloe. We have to go now.”
With tears still staining my cheeks, I gave my mother‟s grave one last caress and then stood. “All right, I‟m ready.”
Drew took my hand again and led me between the plots as best as we could manage. The air outside had chilled even more than when we arrived. It was cold. Really cold. When we approached the gates, warmth suddenly filled my stomach and spread through my body.
“Oh, my… what the heck?” I clutched my stomach as the tingling spread all the way into my fingertips.
“Are you okay?” Drew asked. “What‟s wrong?”
“I don‟t know.” I shook my head. Tears threatened to surface again. “I don‟t know.”
“It‟s your senses, Chloe, telling you something is off.”
Drew and I both spun around and Drew whipped his gun out from underneath his jacket.
“Who are you?” Drew yelled.
There, sitting atop one of the gravestones, bathed in the green glow of florescent lights, was a woman. Even though it was freezing, she barely wore anything, and what she did have on looked like leather wrapped around her body and a halter top with crude lacing holding it together. Snowflakes drifted down and passed through her tanned skin, dissolving into nowhere.
“How do you know me?” I shouted. “Who are you?”
My stomach was still flooded with warmth, and it made me feel like I had to pee. I wished I had brought my gun.
She clicked her tongue and tossed a wave of dark brown hair over her shoulder. “You do not need your weapons, my children. I do not come to harm.”
She slid off the gravestone, and I watched her bare feet sink into the snow. They left no footprints.
“Who are you?” Drew demanded again.
She moved forward slowly. “I am your mother, many times over.”
This chick scared me. Was she a ghost? I moved backward a few steps as she approached, using Drew as a shield, since he had the gun.
She smiled, her dark eyes intently focusing on Drew. “Andrew, lower your weapon. You cannot harm me.”
As if under a spell, Drew lowered his arms and his gun came to rest by his side. “What do you want?”
“I am here to help, Chloe.” She nodded at me and smiled. “You need the help of your ancestors. Your mother cannot help you, so I have come to give you guidance.”
The warmth in my stomach turned into fire in my heart. I can‟t explain it, but I felt the connection with this apparition. I moved out from behind Drew.
“Who are you?” I whispered.
She lifted her chin arrogantly. “I am Sostrate, the daughter of Artemis, and as I have told you already, your mother, many times over.”
“Why are you here?”
“I have come to give you the guidance your mother cannot give you. It is my duty.”
“Are you a ghost?”
She only shook her head and gave me a crooked grin. “I am a demi-goddess. I gained immortality from my mother. I do not come as an apparition, because I cannot die.”
“Holy shit.” Drew actually dropped his gun in the snow.
I moved forward, not afraid anymore. I knew she was who she said she was. As we approached each other, I stretched out my hand, wanting to touch her. She also extended her hand and as my gloved fingers connected with the solid fingertips of hers, I gasped. “You‟re real.”
She nodded. “Of course.”
“Sostrate,” I pulled my hand from hers, “How can you help me?”
“Chloe, it is time that you think with a clear head. Revenge has taken over your heart and your soul, taken over so much of you that you cannot possibly win this battle. It takes more than thinking with your brain. You must fight with love,” she pressed her fist against her heart “not only hatred.”
“I don‟t understand,” I told her.
“Wars are not won because of hatred for the enemy; they are won because of love for what is being defended.”

PERCEPTION is a ( SF/mystery/romance) Young Adult novel that takes place in the not too distant future in a world changed by climate extremes, natural disasters and impending wars, and where scientific breakthroughs cause class divisions—both financially and philosophically.  It explores the clash between faith and science and how differences can separate us as enemies or alliance us together. And in some cases, even in the midst of betrayal and personal crisis, there’s room to fall in love.
This is the first book in a planned three book series.

Seventeen year old Zoe Vanderveen is a GAP—a genetically altered person. She lives in the security of a walled city on prime water-front property along side other equally beautiful people with extended life spans.

Her brother Liam is missing.

Noah Brody is a natural who lives on the outside. He leads protests against the GAPs and detests the widening chasm they’ve created between those who have and those who don’t. He doesn’t like girls like Zoe and he has good reason not to like her specifically.

Zoe’s carefree life takes a traumatic turn.  She’s in trouble and it turns out that Noah, the last guy on earth she should trust, is the only one who can help her.

My Thoughts:
This is a wonderfully creative story.  Well planned and well paced.  I enjoyed the characters immensely.  What I fell in love with though was the idea behind the story.  The idea of people's perceptions: of themselves, of others and of what the world should be like.
I love the comparison of the belief systems of the two main characters, Zoe and Noah.  Noah's belief in faith and God drives him while Zoe believes in science, technology and the absence of religion.  Although they appear to be as different as two people can be, they find themselves believing in each other.
This is not your typical "good vs evil" story.  Although there is an obvious bad guy, the story isn't necessarily about him or even a battle against him.  This also is not your typical YA love story.  It is a love story, it is about battles against good and evil, right and wrong.  Perception seemed to me to be more of a story of the battle each character has within themselves, what they believe and who the believe in and why.
Lee Strauss has created a fantastic and harsh world.  She has filled that world with characters that fall into two categories, Naturals and GAPS, and the two groups are worlds apart on almost every level.  To achieve this variety takes insight, imagination, an open mind, and dedication to detail in every aspect of the story.
This is the beginning...I can't wait to read the rest!

Excerpt to feed your need to read:
Prologue

Fort San Laura Army Base
San Laura, California
May 2017

Sean Evans turned away as tears rolled down his ex-partner Colin Rodriguez’s face. The man sat by his fiancée’s bedside, her hand clasped in his, waiting for her to die. The sound of boot heels echoed up and down the hospital corridor. All marched past the closed door, none brave enough to stop at this room.
Sean stared at the dying woman. Paulette’s red hair was the only color in the monochrome-toned hospital room. Colin’s hand shook as he brushed the hair back from Paulette’s sweaty face. The virus wreaked havoc on the young woman.
Sean swallowed bile rising in his throat as the young Shapeshifter in the bed screamed. Her flesh boiled, roiling beneath the surface, and she screamed again. Her back arched off the bed. For months now, the Shapeshifter Task Force had been working to track down the cause of the virus and it struck close to home, killing two of their own. First, his own partner, Barry, and now, Paulette.
Her fingers turned into talons that dug into Colin’s hand. Blood dripped from the cuts onto the crisp, white sheet. Colin held her hand; the only sign of his pain was the grimace on his tanned face.
Sean rubbed his burning eyes, surprised to find tears on his own cheeks. He scrubbed the wetness away and raked his fingers through his hair. His tears wouldn’t help Paulette or Colin. Nothing could help them now. His hands clenched into fists at his side. He ached to punch a wall, anything to kill the tension in the room.
A scream built in his throat. Just last week he had sat here, forced to watch the young man, new to the task force, breathe his last. He stared into the ceiling lights, his eyes watered with the brightness. He repeated his personal mantra of calm and cool until his emotions mellowed, until they no longer threatened to overwhelm him.
He turned his head back as Paulette’s screams died down to whimpers. She had lost all control of her shifting. She grew fur and it disappeared. Her head changed shape as she shifted into a canine form, then a feline form, then back to her own. Her limbs flopped against the mattress as she convulsed. The shifting now happened every few seconds.
Colin threw himself across her body as if he could stop the tragedy from its conclusion.
“Noooo.” His voice ricocheted across the room and down the hall.
Sean rushed to his best friend’s side and ripped him up off of the dying Shifter. No one had discovered yet how the virus was transmitted. They didn’t need masks and gloves anymore, not in the last several months at least, but no one wanted to find out what full-body contact might do.
Colin struggled against Sean’s hold. Tears blurred Sean’s vision as Paulette struggled to breathe, and Colin’s cries became anguished sobs. His shoulders shook under Sean’s hands.
The monitor blared as Sean searched Paulette for any life signs and found none. Her chest didn’t move. She was gone. Just like Barry. Just like all the other Shifters in the past few months.
Sean turned away as Paulette’s flesh jellified and sank into the mattress, only a slight bump under the covers to show a living being had been there.
Colin’s anguish pierced his soul, and when Colin threw himself across the bed again.  Sean didn’t bother to stop him.  What did it matter when his friend had just lost his partner and the love of his life?
The sounds of harsh breaths and sobs still echoed in Sean’s ears when the door opened and the Captain of the Task Force rushed in. Sean turned to the man and shook his head.
Captain Connors motioned for Sean to talk to him outside. Sean shot a quick look to Colin and followed the captain outside to the hallway.
“Lieutenant Evans, with Robertson’s death today, added to the others, the task force is low on numbers. We will need to send word to the other task forces and ask for reinforcements.”
Sean’s hands formed into fists at his side. The human captain made no bones about his dislike of Shapeshifters, but Paulette’s body wasn’t even cold yet and he drudged up business decisions.
He took deep breaths and relaxed his hands. As the Lead Lieutenant in the task force, business took priority. Even over death.
“Will you send a request to the Southwest office in Las Vegas?” Their own task force office covered the Northwest—Northern California, part of Nevada, and all of Oregon, Washington state, and Idaho.
The captain shook his head. “A few cases have been reported in Los Angeles. We can’t risk it. I’ll request someone from the Midwest. No cases have been reported yet out there. There is a small task force in Columbia, Missouri, an hour outside St. Louis.”

Jill has joined us here for an interview:
? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I piddled around with writing in my 20s and 30s, but I didn’t get serious about it until I hit the big 40 and wanted to do something with it. I joined RWA and got serious.

? How long does it take you to write a book?
About 4-5 months. Dangerous Shift took 6 weeks. That book was magic. The story was all in my head and I just needed to get it down on paper.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
My books are all dreams I’ve had. Like watching a movie while asleep.

? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
Diet Pepsi, Swedish Fish candy, and a kitchen timer.

? How do you decide what you want to write about?
I usually start with a title. From there I get the hero/heroine and their names. Like building blocks, I just add things; hair/eye color, quirks, and a plot for them to fall in love.

? What books have most influenced your life?
Skye O’Malley by Bertrice Small. I love historical romance and hers are uber-hot and sexy.

? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?
The Little Engine that Could. I loved that book.

? What are you reading right now?
End of Days by Robert Gleason and A Very Southern Affair by Elaina Lee

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Read! I read 3 to 5 books a week when I’m between books or in a writing slump.

? What is your favorite comfort food?
Mac and cheese. Yum!!

? What do you think makes a good story?
The Characters. Love after I can’t remember an author’s name or the title of the book I will remember a character.

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
Jennifer Blake. Her historical romances are to die for and she is constantly keeping herself up to date on the industry and what the readers want.

? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?
As a young lady I reread Little Women so many times the spine fell off. I had to duck tape it back together to read it again and again over the years.

Terri has stopped by for an interview:

? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Did I decide this?! J To be perfectly honest, I can’t say that I did decide or have decided. I’ve always written—it’s something I enjoy. Eventually, however, I got to a point where I wanted to expand my reach and wanted to get my work into the hands of people who would enjoy it. Anyone who is a prolific hobbyist/crafter knows that most of us reach a point where we get sick of doing something just for our own enjoyment. For example, I crochet, and I love it, but I can only use so many afghans and sweaters and such. And besides, it’s not as much fun when you keep it all to yourself; it’s more fun when you share your hobby—it’s your love and a part of you, and it expands when it’s shared, it brings joy to others, whether that’s via giving finished products as gifts, passing on knowledge of the craft, or getting others interested in the topic. With the crocheting, eventually I started giving items away, and then entering them into county fairs, and now I’m at a point where friends and family ask me to make them things they can give to someone else as a gift (usually baby blankets). My writing has followed pretty much the same arc. First I wrote for myself, then I posted free stories on the internet, and now I’m at the point where I’d like to expand and reach a little further, share my love and hopefully bring some joy to others, as well.

? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
Hmm, this is a toughie. In a way, writer was my first job. I’ve always loved writing. In grade school, they had us write a story every year, which we then made into a book – we printed it neatly on nice paper, drew pictures to accompany the story, and then sewed it all together with a cardboard wrapped in wall paper for covers. I think that was my favorite thing we did all year and I still have those stories (thanks Mom for keeping them!). However, pretty early on I dismissed this as a career path because everyone told me I couldn’t make any money at it. It wasn’t until 2001 that I really set myself the goal of becoming a published author. The publication of Hereafter is just the first step. I’m not sure having one novel published makes me a “writer.” Of course, I don’t really know what the threshold is. Will I feel like a “writer” when I have two, five, or ten books published? I don’t know.

? How long does it take you to write a book?
I’m still trying to figure that out! J My first novel (unpublished) took nine years. Hereafter (my second novel) took two years. The draft of the Hereafter sequel took a year. Yes! I’m getting faster! My goal is to get to a point where I can write two books per year. I don’t know if I’ll ever get there, but I’m trying.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
Well, I tend to get a lot of ideas in the shower and, somehow, I tend to end up acting out the scenes as they’re coming to me—I guess my brain is trying them out, seeing if they work or something. The end result is my husband frequently sticks his head into the bathroom while I’m showering to ask who I’m talking to. #awkward

? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
I can sleep any place, any time, and the same pretty much goes for writing. However, I do tend to get a lot of ideas while I sleep and in the shower, so I try to keep a pad of paper handy to both places—though there is a whole lot of racing through the house, shampoo still in my hair, looking for paper because I have an idea and I need to write it down before it slips away.

? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
This will probably sound weird but they just pop into my head, usually pretty fully formed. When I write, it’s like I’m recounting a story that someone is telling me—a story that really happened. It feels very real in my head—I can envision it like a movie or a memory.

? How do you decide what you want to write about?
When I get an idea, I sort of explore it in my head for a bit—envisioning the first few scenes/chapters—before I ever write a word down on paper. If I can get into the story, if it draws me in and the characters start becoming real people, then I know it’s a keeper idea, there’s a real story there. If I get stuck pretty quickly about what the conflict would be or I have a hard time pinning down the characters, then I know it’s just a passing thought, not worth committing to paper. This system has worked pretty well for me—I tend to finish every story I start; I have very few abandoned stories.

? What books have most influenced your life?
The Once and Future King by T.H. White. I found this book when I was in 10th or 11th grade in a box of used books a neighbor had given my grandmother (specifically for us “kids”). I read it and fell in love with it. By the time I got to college, I had already developed the habit of reading it yearly on my birthday. However, I never met anyone who had ever heard of this book, let alone read it.

Out on a first date with a fellow student, we stopped at a famous (but now gone) bookstore in Cambridge, MA. My date asked me what my favorite book was—when I told him “The Once and Future King,” he dropped to his knees in shock. “Me, too!” he cried, astounded as I was to finally meet another person who had read it and been as affected by it. That pretty much sealed the deal. We’ve been together ever since—twenty years this October.

? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?
Oddly, I do not have a lot of strong memories from my early childhood and this is one of the ones that has been lost. I don’t remember learning to read, I just sort of always knew how. I vaguely remember reading “See Spot Run” kind of stuff in first grade, but after that I just…read. And read several grade levels ahead. They had a hard time keeping me in books at school.

? What are you reading right now?
The New Death and Other Tales by James Hutchings (which I’m LOVING – I don’t often plug books, but this one I definitely recommend—and it’s only .99 cents!) and Pistols for Two by Georgette Heyer (I’m a sucker for anything Heyer).

? What is your favorite comfort food?
Er, does “food” count? I’m a stress eater (anyone have any good tips for combatting this???) so I’m not always particular when I’m in need of comfort. I love a good homemade macaroni and cheese, and cookies are another particular favorite—there are very few cookies in this world that I do not like! I have a family recipe for something called “favorite casserole” which is basically a sort of homemade mac and cheese with hamburger in it that I love. And, of course, my grandmother’s whoopie pies.

? What do you think makes a good story?
I think this varies by reader and by mood. Sometimes I want to be entertained and sometimes I want to be transported; sometimes I want light and fluffy and sometimes I want deep, affecting, emotional drama. Any story that can make me cry is usually a good story—I so want to write a story that makes people cry, but apparently I’m much better at comedy. Isn’t that always the way?

? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?
I read both The Once and Future King by T.H. White and Idylls of the King by Alfred Lord Tennyson every year around my birthday. I sob buckets at each one, especially Idylls.

Fun random questions:
  • dogs or cats?
Cats rule! I currently have three. But I’d love to have a dog, too.
  • Coffee or tea?
Definitely tea! Coffee gives me a stomach ache
  • Dark or milk chocolate?
Why is this an “or” question?! Chocolate = yes. J
  • Rocks or flowers?
Another toughie – I like both! But I guess I have to lean toward flowers, though I do have a small rock collection.
  • Night or day?
Argh! Now I’m feeling like I have trouble making choices, LOL! Um…day, I guess. But both have their good sides J
  • Favorite color?
Red
  • Crayons or markers?
Fine-point markers
  • Pens or pencils?
Definitely pens; I never got the hang of pencils.

(Yes! I managed to finish on a decisive note—whoohoo!)

Hereafter by Terri Bruce
Why let a little thing like dying get in the way of a good time?

Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn't plan on dying any time soon, but that’s exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on earth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn’t get you drunk, and the sex...well, let’s just say “don’t bother.” To make matters worse, the only person who can see her—courtesy of a book he found in his school library—is a fourteen-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife.

This sounds suspiciously like hell to Irene, so she prepares to strike out for the Great Beyond. The only problem is that, while this side has exorcism, ghost repellents, and soul devouring demons, the other side has three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment. If only there was a third option…
