A Vampire's Deadly Delight by Liv Rancourt.

Liv Rancourt is a writer of speculative fiction and romance. She lives in Seattle with her husband, two teenagers, two cats and one wayward puppy. Writing stories that have happy endings is a good way to balance her work in the neonatal intensive care unit, and she is thrilled to be publishing her first novella with Black Opal Books. Liv can be found on-line at her website (www.livrancourt.com), her blog (www.liv-rancourt.blogspot.com), on Facebook (www.facebook.com/liv.rancourt), or on Twitter (www.twitter.com/LivRancourt).

Excerpt for your reading pleasure:
Kristen finds herself in an unfortunate position…or does she?

“Vivienne, what is this?” The voice was deep, resonant, a perfect match for the man who came  through the door. He was a modern update of a classic Greek hero, square jaw, strong nose, close-cropped golden curls and all. But—and this is significant—he smelled. Vampire. Dried meat left too long in the back cupboard mixed with old dirt and a hint of manure. Vampire.

This I could deal with.

I felt the change begin as soon as my mind registered his scent. My body got soft, like it was melting, and my legs stretched, shoulders broadened, and pudgy curves shifted into more strategic locations. My frizzy hair even calmed down, falling into loose waves that framed my temporary cheekbones.
I wasn’t Kristen anymore. I was Jai, a vampire’s most deadly delight.
“You have loosed an asp in our bower,” the vampire said softly.

Vivienne gasped. The chains snapped easily when I tugged at them. I was much stronger than Kristen.

“Your associates need to do better research, Shakespeare,” I said, as I pried the cuffs from my wrists.

They clanked onto the stone floor. I swung my legs around so I was sitting on the edge of the bed. I didn’t need Kristen’s bifocals, so the glasses were gone. I stood up in knee-high boots with what felt like 4-inch stilettos. I’ve always loved high heels. I think. My memory’s not so great.

Kristen’s pumpkin dress had morphed into a little peach-colored cotton top and pair of denim Daisy Dukes that put my flat tummy on proud display.

Nobody moved for a second while I worked off the ankle cuffs and adjusted my top. It would never do to flash The Girls at a dead guy before it was time.

“Dude, what’s up?” I stalked towards him in a barely controlled surge of energy, letting those four inch heels put a sinuous swing into my step.

Vivienne held the candle, frozen in place. “I swear I did not know, Master.”

The vampire was trying to poke holes in me with his eyes. I walked right up to him, pressing The Girls lightly into his chest. In my heels, I had maybe an inch on him, so I
angled my gaze down until I met his amber eyes.

He didn’t move, which was a little strange. Most vampires couldn’t keep their hands off me, pawing at me like drunken high-school boys as soon as they got close enough.

“Don’t you like me, Shakespeare?” I purred, my lips nearly touching his cheekbone.

“I will ask you but once, Jai. Please take a step back.”

“Whoa, Shakespeare, no fair. You know my name, now you have to tell me yours.”

Her Man Flint by Jerri Drennen
Blurb
If James Bond and Cleopatra Jones had a daughter, Adriana Kent would kick her ass.

Everything Adriana knows about being a top-notch, undercover agent she's learned from her partner, Flint Morgan, in and out of the sheets. That is, until he's caught between those same bed linens with another woman. Heartbroken, Adriana refuses to forgive him. But when 'the other woman' is found dead in Flint's apartment, she steps up to prove his innocence--he might be a womanizer, but he's no killer.

As Adriana closes in on a suspect, she's kidnapped and sent overseas to a sadistic prince who collects women like priceless pieces of art. Now this tough as nails agent finds herself playing the helpless courtesan to a man hell-bent on breaking her spirit. Flint arrives in the nick of time, dressed as a harem girl, fighting off randy guards and surly camels to rescue Adriana so they can fly back to the states to find a way to exonerate him for murder.

Excerpt
“Are you going to lie there all day, or are we going to get the hell out of Dodge?”
The voice was unmistakable. “Adriana,” he growled.
“What? Were you expecting Lindsey ‘Silicone’ Warren, perhaps?” Adriana popped her head out from behind the huge rock in front of him for a brief second, glared, then ducked behind the boulder again. “Sorry to disappoint you, but that woman wouldn’t break a fake nail to save your arrogant ass.”
“Cute.” Flint eased up and clutched his side, putting pressure on the wound in hopes of easing the flow of blood between his fingers.
“You think she’d care one way or the other if you made it out of here alive?” Adriana continued. “Who do you think set you up anyway?”
“You did,” Flint tossed her way.
She jumped up again, her eyes spitting fire. “The hell I did. I stopped by Billy’s this morning. He asked me what I wanted when I called you yesterday.” With a seriousness Flint had never seen before, she shook her blonde head, her glare boring into him. “I never called you. He told me you were headed out here, and I knew you were in big trouble. Did you know your precious Lindsey dated Hartford?”
“What?” Flint’s mouth slacked in astonishment.
“Yeah, they were a hot item last summer.” Her gaze turned ice cold. “Apparently the relationship never ended. Why would you think I’d set you up anyway? Believe it or not, I did care for you at one time.”
Adriana abruptly looked up and aimed her rifle, firing at a man who’d popped his head over the ledge, then cursed like a sailor when she missed the mark. “Move your ass. I’m not going to be your back forever.”
She fired again, this time smiling with satisfaction when the man clutched at his shoulder.
“One down.”
Flint scrambled over to the boulder she used as a shield and pulled himself behind it, moving in close to her. Instantly, her womanly scent filled the air around him, a perfume he remembered all too well—a sweet, flowery fragrance with just a hint of musk. The stuff had always done strange things to his libido. Today was no exception. Even in danger and wounded, he found it difficult to ignore her wonderful essence. Hell, her in general.
“Why’d you come, Dray?” He slid to the ground, his back against the rock while he wiped sweat from his brow onto his shirtsleeve.
He glanced back at her with curiosity. Today, her long, ash-blonde hair was pulled away from her face, her perfect ivory complexion smudged with dirt that no way detracted from her beauty. Her attention was on their surroundings—no doubt trying to figure the best way to get them out of the mess he’d gotten them into.
He watched her intently, shocked to realize he’d missed her. “Why’d you save me?”
She turned to face him. “We’re partners. Isn’t that what partners do?”
“But what about—”
“Forget it. So our personal relationship didn’t work out—that doesn’t mean our professional association at the department can’t continue.”
Adriana turned away and fired again, this time at a man who’d started down the ravine after them. Her shot was off again.
Intense pain cut through Flint’s side as he shifted his body. “I owe you one.”
She returned her attention to him and grinned. “Do I get to choose payment?”
Before he could answer, she turned to the leather-clad man who was moving again. Taking aim, she fired, hitting the goon in the leg. The blast sent the assailant firing wildly in the air before tumbling down into the gorge.
“That’s two.” Her triumphant smile said she was pleased with herself.
“We were discussing payment. What’d you have in mind?” Flint’s grin turned to a grimace when another wave of pain sliced through him.
Adriana’s frown deepened as she studied the area. “Let’s get out of this alive, and then we’ll talk.” She pointed to his side. “How bad is it? You think you can run?”
Despite the blood soaking his shirt, he knew he could scramble if need be. “It’s nothing. I’ll be right behind you.”
“Let’s go.” Adriana raced for the next boulder about twenty feet away, Flint hot on her heels. On the way, she tried to sidestep sagebrush in her path, but instead hit it head-on and stumbled, rolling to the rocky ground and landed hard on her back.
Flint dove on top her as a barrage of bullets flew over them.
“Man, they really want you dead. Could you get off me?” She scowled and tried to push him away, her breath coming in quick, uneven gasps.
Flint stared at her flushed face, painfully aware of the soft yet firm breasts beneath him. Emotions he’d thought long dead stirred him to distraction.
“I’m sure the same thought crossed your mind a time or two.” He studied her face for a reaction, then lifted himself from her.
A hint of amusement danced in her eyes. “No, not dead. Castrated maybe.”
As she rose in preparation to run again, her meaning sunk in and caused Flint’s groin to twitch. “Oh, that hurt.”
He grabbed her arm and pulled her back to the ground as another bullet buzzed past them.
“Yes, I imagine it would for someone who thought with his dick instead of his brain.”
Flint couldn’t help but smile. She had such a foul, sexy mouth. He reached over and laced his fingers through a loose strand of hair, caressing its soft, silky texture. “Have I ever told you, Dray, that you have the prettiest blonde hair?”
“Yes, as a matter of fact you have. It was right around the time you were trying to get in my pants.” She glanced around. “We don’t have time for reminiscing, Flint. If you hadn’t noticed, people are trying to kill us.”
“Right. Well, it is nice,” he mumbled under his breath.
Adriana wiggled away and sat up. “Flatter me later.”
He chuckled, then grimaced when his amusement garnered him a kick in the shin.
Another round flew by and ricocheted off a nearby rock, sending them scurrying further behind the boulder protecting them, and reminded Flint that they weren’t forgotten by their attackers.
Hunching over her, he asked, “Where’s your car?”
“Over there.” Adriana pointed to a large formation and almost lost a finger when another slug zipped past.
She gasped and clutched at her hand, her eyes narrowing on him.
“Are you hurt?” Flint reached for her fingers, but she pulled away.
“If I lose even a hair on my head, Flint Morgan, you’ll pay.”
Like a snake, she slithered toward the large rock where her car was hidden. A well-timed storm cloud crossed over the sun and cast a shadow over the ravine, giving them the opportunity to make their move to the larger formation.
Flint crawled behind Adriana. He couldn’t help but admire her perfectly rounded bottom, clad in a pair of tan khakis. She really did have the best looking rear-end he’d ever seen in his life.
“Did I ask you to save my ass?” he asked, his mind now consumed by hers, rather than what he should be worried about—getting them out of this mess alive.
“No, but I couldn’t help but recall yours, and I didn’t want to see it get shot off. Now crawl faster before my ass is the one that ends up with lead in it.”
He smiled again. The women definitely had wit.
They made their way to a pile of enormous boulders, just a few feet from Adriana’s red Porsche when Flint heard the faint thrum of a helicopter in the distance.
Adriana cursed. “Who the hell’s coming now—guerilla fighters? What if they’re not the good guys, Flint? What are we going to do?”
“Just keep moving. We’ll do whatever we have to. You got any guns in your car?”
“Yeah, two. No extra ammo, though. Only what’s loaded in my Glock and .45.”
The chopper flew overhead and circled the compound before fanning out into what was clearly a search maneuver.
“Can you see any markings on the craft?” Flint squinted, trying to make out anything that would give him some idea whether it was friend or foe.
Her green eyes widened and in a soft voice she said, “I don’t think we’re going to make it out of here alive, Flint. I need to tell you something.”
“Oh? What’s that?” he asked, his attention still on the helicopter above them.
“I wanted you to know—”
“I think it’s Billy,” he interrupted, waving his hands to draw the pilot’s attention.
The craft flew over them once, then landed in an open field a short distance away.
“Run.” Flint grasped her arm and pulled her toward the aircraft, using a zigzag pattern to dodge stray bullets, while fighting the rush of intense whirlwind caused by the propeller blades.
When they reached the chopper, he shoved Adriana inside and jumped in behind her.
Instantly, they took off, hovering just long enough for them to see three men aiming their weapons up in the air.
“Get us the hell out of here, Billy. Before they shoot us down.” The ping of a bullet hit the side of the chopper and pounded home the importance of Flint’s words.
“Right away, boss. Glad to see you’re alive. I thought I was going to have to take you out in a body bag.”
The chopper pivoted forward and left the compound.
“You might have had to if Adriana hadn’t come along. Say Dray”…Flint glanced at the blood clotting on his shirt, then looked up to meet her gaze. “What were you trying to tell me back there?”
Adriana shook her head. “Nothing. It wasn’t important.”
She turned to stare out the window, leaving Flint to wonder what seemed so dire just seconds ago, yet now that they were safely on their way home, turned into nothing?

Review: Pride's Run by Cate Kalen

Pride's Run by Cat Kalen

Amazon Product Description:
Seventeen year old Pride is a tracker—a werewolf with a hunger for blood. Taught to trick and to lure, she is the perfect killing machine. Kept leashed in the cellar by a master who is as ruthless as he is powerful, Pride dreams of freedom, of living a normal life, but escape from the compound is near impossible and disobedience comes with a price. When she learns her master intends to breed her she knows she has to run. Pride soon learns if she is to survive in the wild, she must trust in the boy who promises her freedom, the same boy she was sent to hunt. With life and death hanging in the balance the two find themselves on the run from the Paranormal Task Force—officers who shoot first and ask questions later—as well as her master’s handlers. Can Pride flee the man who has held her captive since birth and find sanctuary in the arms of a boy who has captured her heart? Or will her master find her first?

My thoughts:
I truly enjoyed this book.  The characters are well developed and easy to invest in.  The story is wonderfully written and nicely edited.  Cate Kalen has a way with words and the ability to put the reader on the edge of their seat.  I never would have guessed that this was a debut novel, this is quality writing!
Pride and Logan are both fantastic characters, you can't help but fall in love with them.  Stone, now he's another story; as a reader, I both loved and hated him depending upon where I was at in the book.  Cate Kalen has filled this story with emotional turmoil and you ride that roller coaster of heartache, sacrifice, desire, longing, fear, and hope on every page.  A fantastic addition to YA paranormal.  Don't miss out on this one.  I am barely able to wait for the second installment of Pride's story!

Blog Tour: Let Us Prey by Jamie Lee Scott

This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
You can see the entire tour schedule by clicking HERE.
Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour!
It is my pleasure to present Jamie Lee Scott!

About Jamie Lee Scott
Jamie was born on the Central Coast of California, where she spent her entire childhood entertaining.  She wrote plays and charged admission to her backyard stage so her friends and family could enjoy the performances.  She wrote her first novel at the age of 10, for her 5th grade class project. The novel was called Cindy.
Busy with horses and school, Jamie rarely wrote through her teens and twenties, she was living a life most dreamed of (well, she dreamed of anyway), competing at barrel races, hanging out with cowboys, and traveling in rodeo circles with her friends. Money was tight, but life was good.  Then Jamie met the man of her dreams. And low and behold he was not a cowboy, but a farm boy. They married and he swept her away to her little piece of heaven in Iowa.
Well, then Iowa didn't turn out to be such heaven, Jamie again turned to fiction. This time she wrote to relieve the stress of living so far from her family, and from running a business with her husband. Funny how she now found it cathartic to kill people, only on paper of course.
Before she finished her first full length novel, Jamie was contracted to write the book, Hiking Iowa for Falcon publishing. In a year, she hiked 75 trails in the state of Iowa and mapped the trails, landmarks and  distances. And this was before GPS. It was tough work for the measly advance, but it was a writing credit.  So now, Jamie writes the mystery series featuring the Gotcha Detective Agency.
Jamie has written three novels, Let Us Prey, the soon to be released Death of a Sales Rep, and Give a Dog a Bone. She is currently writing screenplays.  She is co-founder of Scriptchat on Twitter www.scriptchat.com & TWWriterChat www.tvwriterchat.com, and is the former president of RWA’s screenwriting chapter, Script Scene.
Jamie still lives in Iowa (though she visits California as often as possible) with her husband, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 horses. She writes with a few from her 6 acre farm.
She has graciously offered this interview:
? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’m not sure I realized it all at once, but I do know that I hated English classes in high school and college. Funny thing, it was my college critical writing class that made me realize I was good at writing, but it was years later that I realized people actually got paid to write.

? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
I don’t think there is enough room to list all of the jobs I’ve had in my lifetime, but rest assured each one has contributed to my writing life. I still run 2 businesses with my husband, a restaurant A&W, and a jewelry business. The restaurant may be the reason I decided to write murder mysteries.

? How long does it take you to write a book?
The writing doesn’t actually take that long, maybe 8 weeks. It’s the mulling and outlining that take forever, sometimes up to 6 months. The scenes don’t come to me in order, but I feel the need to put them in order before writing, so I outline extensively. And then the whole thing changes again when I type the first word, go figure.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
I talk to my characters as I’m writing. I say things like, “Whatever, you can’t say that.” And then I let them say it. I also like to dictate with a software program, because sometimes I think the words are more natural when I speak them, rather than type them.

? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
Because whatever story I’m working on is in my head all the time while I’m writing it, and because I’m writing about my hometown which I miss desperately, I can’t wait to sit down and write. Usually when I sit, the words just flow, but I think this has to do with my outlining process. I do need my own space with no interruptions, but that’s about it.

? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
The inspiration for the murder and the characters involved in Let Us Prey came from a story an author told at a writing conference.  As for the regular players, Mimi, Charles, Nick, Cortnie, and Jackie, they are all a mash of people I know. I have a picture in my head of the person they represent, so I never forget what they look like and type the wrong eye or hair color.

? How do you decide what you want to write about?
Well, since I write murder mysteries, I know I’m going to write about death, and if I picture the victim as someone who wronged me in my real life, I don’t have such a hard time imagining a painful death. (oh, did I just type that?) Mostly I find stories based in fact, I just tweak the facts to fit a story in which I can involve my main characters. Because seriously, how many P.I.s will ever really come across so many dead bodies. And for my other series, the amateur sleuth runs a dog bakery, so the chances of dead people popping up have even lower odds.
Let Us Prey came about because of a story I heard about an author being attacked at a conference. Death of a Sales Rep is based on a story I read about a greedy sales rep, and Textual Relations is from an incident that occurred with one of my employees. Of course all the facts and people are changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.

? What books have most influenced your life?
Peak Performance by Charles Garfield

? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?
I don’t know which one, but it was a Fun with Dick and Jane book. The first book I bought was called The Mysterious Blunder Bones, from my 3rd grade book club.

? What are you reading right now?
Blood Orchids by Toby Neal, and Your Sitcom Mission (I write TV sitcoms and dramas)

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
My whole life, including writing, revolves around my horses. I currently have two.

? What is your favorite comfort food?
Cool Ranch Doritos with guacamole and salsa! Or crackers with red pepper smothered cream cheese. Oh, and always, chocolate. Sorry I couldn’t narrow it to just one.

? What do you think makes a good story?
Conflict, interesting characters and more conflict.

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
Jane Smiley, because she writes about horses and horse racing, and her characters stay with me long after I’ve closed the book (or the Kindle cover).
And Elmore Leonard because he writes dialogue the way it should be written.

? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?
On Writing by Stephen King, Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley.

Fun random questions:

  • dogs or cats? Dogs, but I like my barn cats.
  • Coffee or tea? Coffee, definitely coffee.
  • Dark or milk chocolate? Depends on how close it is to that time of the month.
  • Rocks or flowers? Rocks with flowers painted on them.
  • Night or day? Night.
  • Favorite color? Chocolate brown.
  • Crayons or markers? Markers.
  • Pens or pencils? This is a tough one, but I’ll go with pens.

Let Us Prey

Book 1, Gotcha Detective Agency Mysteries
By Jamie Lee Scott

Mimi Capurro has been hired to protect New York Times bestselling author, Lauren Silke, who was recently assaulted in the bathroom at a paranormal conference. Though Mimi is hired to act as bodyguard for Lauren’s upcoming book tour, plans change when Lauren's assistant is murdered and the slaying is a replica of a scene from Lauren’s newest novel. A novel that hit bookstores the same day as the killing.

Now instead of playing bodyguard, Mimi is cracking computer code, and chasing down vampires. These vampires come alive on the streets of Santa Cruz, as part of a live-role-playing game. Mimi must find the connection between the vampires and the author to track down the killer. This would be much easier if Detective Nick Christianson wanted her investigating the case.
Nick, Mimi’s old college fling, is the lead homicide investigator.

Though he wants her off the case, he also wants to pump her for information. Nick may have used her in the past, but this time she’ll use him to try to catch the murderer first.
