Kiernan heard them coming with her heart in her throat and leaned in closer to Beck as they lay side by side in a furrow of soil atop one of the fortifications created by the earthshifters the evening before. The ominous sound of thousands of feet rushing toward her in the pre-dawn darkness was as frightening as it was meant to be. Jaimes Atlan warned them that Adrian Ravener would try to intimidate them. He would want them to make mistakes out of sheer terror.

I am with you, Princess, said Bajan, who was crouched behind her. Do not be afraid. Any creature that gets close will have me to deal with.

Bajan, just in case…. she began, but he cut her off.
Do not make it sound like the end, because it is not. I promise. You will have time to torment me for many years to come.
I do not mean to torment you.
I would not have it any other way.
Despite her fright, she smiled at the Draca’s words.
The long, sinister sound of the enemy battle horn wrenched Kiernan back to the present in a rush. Every fiber of her being urged her to run, to get away from there.
Death was coming, and she was right in its path.
Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and drew on the power of her magic to calm her mind. She was a warrior, she chided herself. A protector. If death was coming for her, it would have a fight on its hands.

A far second to oranges, the song I sang in the shower every night had a way of soothing me. More than anything, it made me tired enough to fall asleep. With Whitney gone, I didn’t have to whisper it.

I didn’t recall composing that song, but apparently, I used to think I was good and perfect like the angels. I knew better now.

I stepped out of the shower and tugged a brush through my unruly brown tangles. I stared into the mirror over the sink as I started the song again. My skin screamed winter. I should be a warmer tan; I looked less creepy in the summer. Maybe that was why the girls had been digging into me so hard. I looked rather witchy. The unease that made them mock me was probably their souls warning them, urging them to notice I was different and dangerous.

At my worst, it feels like the fire that could easily shoot from my palm is raging inside of me. My heart picks up, more than when I’m scared. It pounds, I can’t hear. My blood dances, taunting me, begging me to hurt whoever’s hurt me. And I know that I can. I feel that I can.

But I don’t. I breathe and pray and let the magic cool.

Short Excerpt:

 The city was suddenly there, a huge half-circle sprawled out before them.  It was ringed by high walls of gray stone, broken here and there by towers.  Blue and white banners stood atop the ramparts, tossing gently in the morning breeze.  And sure enough, behind it rose the great stony peaks of the Pummeling Razor of God, forming an impenetrable wall against the sky.  They completely dominated the view of anyone looking west.  Where had they been all this time?

Three gates punctuated the walls.  A wide cobbled road led to each.  Spiff’s eye followed one of these roads out from the city, and saw it branch into a few smaller roads, each of which spiderwebbed out into tinier paths.  The dirt road they were on led to one of these.

They came to the intersection, and Spiff saw that there was a signpost driven into the ground.  Two sharpened slats of wood were nailed to it, one pointing down each of the paths away from the city.  Nothing was written on either of them.

He asked Euclid what it meant.  The mouse shrugged, a barely perceptible gesture when made by a creature his size.  “We were nowhere.  Now we are Somewhere.”

My thoughts:

Wow!  I wasn't sure what to expect from this little book, but I was pleasantly surprised by such a big adventure.  Well written and filled with a host of unforgettable, widely varied characters.  I love fantasy adventure and was thrilled with this story.

My thoughts:
Well written and entertaining.  This book grabs you from the first page and holds on until the end, where it leaves you wanting more.  The plot is twisty and clever.  The characters are nicely developed and easy to fall for.  Filled with emotion, the author brings us remarkable characters who fight for a love that an actual person could never hope to be a part of.  I can't wait to read the next one.
