Excerpt:
from Mr. Virile and the Girl Next Door

Holly Winters. That name sounded familiar, but he couldn’t recall why.
A prickle of unease hit Dane between his shoulder blades, where he always held his tension until his weekly session with Brigit and her Fingers of Wonder. Yet another woman off limits. He would never do anything to screw up his massage hour.
Holly Winters was…cute…for lack of better word. Like, Laura Ingalls Wilder in a black cocktail dress. He tried to place her in his memory, but it became frustratingly clear he hadn’t slept with her. He’d have remembered all those freckles. He’d have done a lot of connecting- the-dots.
She, like her agent, shook hands with an easy confidence and, as Mags introduced him, a momentary cloud passed over her eyes. Was she trying to figure out a connection as well? There was small talk as they stood around the table, but Dane was distracted. Had they gone to school together? Was she somebody’s sister? He placed her firmly in the mid-twenties range based on, well, his experience with women of varying ages. He tried to mentally dress her in different outfits to jog his memory, but all he succeeded in doing was mentally undressing her.
Not helping.
It was just that she was curvy. The kind of curves that spilled out of bras, which had him dying to know how low those freckles went. He was sure he could find out, but wasn’t sure he should. He needed to figure out why her name was familiar if her face and body were not.
“Mitch!” Magdalene gasped, pantomiming a ridiculous amount of agitation. “I just remembered…we’re supposed to be at that office thing, um, meeting right now.”
Mitch, not nearly as good at feigning surprise, also gasped. “How could we have forgotten? If we hurry, we may still make it on time.”
A flurry of apologies ensued with both agents talking a mile a minute and making zero sense. A waitress brought over the Cosmo Mags had ordered, and Mags encouraged Holly to take her place or the drink would go to waste. Dane barely had time to protest their leaving when they were just…gone.
Holly blinked at him a few times, the little crease above her nose furrowing crescents deep into her skin. “Well, that was weird.”
Her voice sucker punched him. It was low, throaty, and it flipped a switch inside him that was normally reserved for blondes about six inches taller. Holly was cute, but not hot. And she had a nice set, but he was a leg man.
Usually.
They’d obviously been set up for some reason, and he was supposed to know something about her that he didn’t. All of these things should make him wary and rational instead of suddenly very, very turned on.
Dane shook his head and remembered his manners, pulling out a chair. “Weird seems tame, but I agree.”
Holly took Mags’ seat and held up her new drink in toast when he sat down. “Well, here’s to getting the bottom of it.”
He tried to come up with a quip or thought or, hell, anything to say, but his tongue couldn’t work around the sandpaper dryness in his mouth. He wasn’t actually nervous was he? He reminded himself that he was twenty-eight years old, not fourteen, but this sensation felt achingly close.
Dane tried to recall the last time a woman had made him nervous and came up with—too long ago to remember. Well, except for the dominatrix two years ago, but that was a different kind of nervous and, while he enjoyed the experience, it wasn’t one he’d repeat.
No, this feeling was completely different. He was…anxious. Filled with a sweet anticipation that made all his nerve endings a little raw. He’d been coasting safely on a very scenic highway for many years, but all of the sudden, it felt like he was going off-road for an adventure in pot holes, blind corners and lots of mud. His adrenalin spiked even as he tried to talk himself down.
“So, Dane, why are we here?” Holly asked without guile.
God, that voice. Even a direct, honest question sounded provocative.
He’d have to play this one cool. Not usually a problem, but tonight was going to take some concentration. “I’m here meeting my agent for a drink to talk about my upcoming book release.” Though obviously, that wasn’t what Mags had really invited him here for. “You?”
Those crescents deepened above her nose again. He tightened the grip on his glass to avoid the temptation to smooth her brow gently with his finger. What the hell was wrong with him?
“Same actually,” she answered.
“So, you’re a writer?” he asked.
“Accidentally, I suppose. I’m a blogger with a book deal.”
“Well, that explains what we have in common,” Dane replied. “I run a website as well. My book comes out in July. You?”
“Next year.” She had faint crinkle lines when she smiled and it turned his stomach inside out. Why, he had no idea. “Congratulations. What’s your book about?” she asked.
Dane tipped his glass and watched the amber liquid move with the motion. He was proud of his website and even prouder of his book, but suddenly it seemed…shallow. His life’s work and he was ashamed to admit it to this woman. “Dating advice for men.”
Holly sputtered, and her pink drink sprinkled the table. She quickly mopped up the mess with the cocktail napkin in one hand while covering her cough with the other.
“Uh…” he eloquently expressed. Idiot.
“I’m so sorry. And embarrassed. And wanting to die,” she said. “It’s just that…oh my God.” She shook her head.
It occurred to him that he liked the fact that she seemed so human. It seemed like all the women he spent time with were practiced, maybe even a little plastic if he thought about it too hard. This girl with a husky laugh and genuine imperfections like smile lines and freckles felt like a new frontier of some kind. Why did women try so hard to cover them up?
“You’re going to have to fill me in here, Holly. What has you so flustered?”
Smoothing the bodice of her dress, Holly tried very hard to repaint some poise over her composure. “I just realized who you must be.”
Dane felt his eyebrows reaching for his hairline. “And who might that be, exactly?”
She downed the rest of the Cosmo in one gulp. “You, sir, are the antithesis of everything I hold dear.”

Blog Tour: Telepathic Clans #1: The Succubus Gift by BR Kingsolver

This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
Welcome to The Wormhole and my first day on this tour.
It is my pleasure to feature:
BR Kingsolver and The Succubus Gift.

About the author:
I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school and I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I’d like to see Banff in Canada.

I have a very significant other, two cats and two Basset Hounds. I’m currently living in Baltimore, nine blocks from the harbor, but still own a home in New Mexico that I see too infrequently.

The Succubus Gift,
Book 1 of the Telepathic Clans Saga
BR Kingsolver

Genre: Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance (Adult/New Adult)
Number of pages: 240     Word Count: 85,000
Cover Artist: Rebecca Sinz
Also available on Apple iTunes book store.

Book Description:
The history of the Clans, called the Sidhe by the Irish, stretches back to antiquity. The Goddess blesses Her people with 25 Telepathic Gifts. In addition to Telepathy, the Gifts include command over Air and Fire, Telekinesis and Teleportation. In over 2,500 years, She has never bestowed more than 15 Gifts on a single person.

Brenna Morgan was orphaned at eight when her parents were killed in a plane crash. Through one foster home after another, she carried the ornate, carved wooden box her mother had left with her, keeping it always a secret. Then one night she stumbles over a man who claims her as family.

Brenna’s life isn’t the same after she discovers her unusual and mysterious heritage. In addition to being a telepath, Brenna learns she has the Succubus Gift.

That’s just the beginning of her problems. Someone is stalking her. Then there’s the tall, dangerous woman who shadows her and hints a Goddess has linked them. And what is she going to do with a handsome, charismatic, womanizing man she knows she should avoid?

Some days a girl just wants to pull the covers over her head and stay in bed -- with a willing young man of course.

My thoughts:
Fantastic story.  Interesting, captivating plot and wonderful characters.  A spin I haven't seen with the psychic set.  The infrastructure of the clan was clever and original.  The shared "gifts" was intriguing.  It was fascinating to watch Brenna's transformation, although I thought it took long enough for her to decide what she wanted from Collin.

I truly enjoyed this first installment of the Telepathic Clans Saga and cannot wait to read the next two books.

Blog Tour: Bad Apple by Barbara Morgenroth

This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour.
It is my pleasure to feature:
Barbara Morgenroth and Bad Apple.
Barbara has stopped by for an interview:
? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I don’t know that I ever had that realization.  I was just a writer always.
I wanted to be a photographer when I realized how much fun that could be and that I couldn’t draw worth a darn but still had the ability to see what made a good image.

? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
One.  I taught horseback riding.  I had an internship gig at a photographer’s business and did all his newspaper work while he stayed at the studio and did his thing there.  It wasn’t technically a job and wasn’t paid but I learned a lot.  At that point, I thought I was going to be a photojournalist so it seemed like I was getting somewhere.  Then I started the stable and when the owner of the property wanted to go back to dairy farming, I began writing a novel.  I was 24 and that book was published two years later.

? How long does it take you to write a book?
I have a couple that I would say have taken me up to five years to write and polish so they’re where I’m happy with them.   Most of my books take about six months.   It depends on the book and how complicated the story and the characters are.  Sometimes you just need time to think.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
It’s not interesting, it’s just appalling how long it takes me to get down to work each day.

? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
I wish I did, then there would be some predictability about it!

? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
That’s the great mystery of the creative process.  Things come to you.  Pieces fit in a way they never did before.  You draw from many sources and it all weaves together like a tapestry.

? How do you decide what you want to write about?
I don’t think I decide.  It’s more of a compulsion.  An idea won’t shake free, it just stays at the edge of your mind until you realize there is something there waiting to be explored, something to be said.

? What books have most influenced your life?
I read all the Little House books, the Anne of Avonlea books, the Whiteoaks of Jalna books, the Horatio Hornblower books.  I think those were very important to me for a time.  The idea of a series appealed to me, how the books followed a person or a family for years or generations.   Now I like doing a series but by nature they are more episodic than a standalone book and other people find that more difficult than I do.

? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?
I think it was something about Lucinda the donkey.

? What are you reading right now?
I like biographies very much so I’m reading about the life of the songwriter Irving Berlin.

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I love to do photography,  knit, garden and play Boggle online.

? What is your favorite comfort food?
Pasta has to be the winner.  Although, let’s be serious.  French fries are great, aren’t they?
Fried, salty and carbohydrates.  They hit all the bases.

? What do you think makes a good story?
A good story is the balance between action and character.  If all you have is action or plot, then the story is shallow.  If all you hear about is the inner world of the character, you feel like nothing is happening.  Finding the balance is quite difficult but it’s done all the time by all kinds of writers so it’s not impossible.

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
Umberto Eco.  He is so intelligent, so well-read, and so smart about human nature that his books just glow.  He is able to balance the exterior world with the interior world perfectly.

? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?
Didn’t we all read the Harry Potter books over and over until the next one was released?
I did.  I don’t think I’ll ever reread them since I practically know them by heart now.

I read Jane Austen again and again and expect that won’t change.

Fun random questions:
  • dogs or cats?  I’m actually a horse person.
  • Coffee or tea?  Tea.
  • Dark or milk chocolate?  Bittersweet.
  • Rocks or flowers?  Flowers.  They lend themselves so well to being photographed.
  • Night or day?  Day.  Being a photographer is pretty much about being in love with light.
  • Favorite color?  Blue.
  • Crayons or markers?  Crayons.
  • Pens or pencils?   Fountain pens.

More About the Author:
Barbara was born in New York City and but now lives somewhere else. By now, she thinks of herself as a country girl and knows more about gardening and animals than how to ride the subway.

Starting her career by writing tweens and YA books, (and did the cover photography for her first two books published by Atheneum so continuing to do the covers to her ebooks is predictable), she was actually aiming at the small screen. Television seemed like the perfect place for her even if she had no clue how to get there. Life is funny and often presents opportunities. Advice--Grab Them! Through a neighbor, Barbara wound up getting an introduction to a lower honcho at ABC and an audition to write for them. Her hopes were more than dashed, they were disintegrated, evaporated, demolished when ABC couldn't find a place for Barbara on General Hospital. (No Luke and Laura in her future!) To ease the crushing disappointment, Barbara wrote “In Real Life I'm Just Kate” about a 17 year old girl who becomes a star on a soap opera. That became an open sesame moment and shortly thereafter Barbara became the last headwriter for NBC's daytime serial, The Doctors, where she was ordered by the network to kill Alec Baldwin, shooting him not once but twice. With two different guns. From different directions.

Ah, good times.

You can read the book that started Barbara’s television career as the Kindle YA ebook, “Just Kate”, now with a substantial tweak because living life made her smarter.

You can also read about some could-be-hers-could-be-rumors experiences gleaned during Barbara’s stint in daytime television in the Kindle romantic comedy, In Under My Head.  Barbara is a recipient of a Writers Guild of America Best Writing Award for her work on One Life To Live.

Whether you're looking for a Mature YA or a romantic comedy, Barbara has a book for you!

My thoughts:
This little book opens up a world of emotions, issues and a reality that is frightening.  The human animal is truly hard to understand.  This story gives us an inside look at the life of a girl named Neal.  A girl who learned early how to stay alive and later how to hope for more.

About Lisa Voisin:

I am a novelist who writes young adult fiction mainly in the paranormal and urban fantasy genres.  After studying English literature at the University of Toronto and creative writing at Simon Fraser University, I had the great fortune of being mentored by Nancy Richler and A.M. But the past is never far behind for the Wentworths. While Sarah is haunted by new visions, now about the baby she carried over three hundred years before, James is confronted with painful memories from his time with the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears. Through it all, the persistent reporter Kenneth Hempel reappears, still determined to prove that the undead walk the earth. If Hempel succeeds in his quest, James and Sarah will suffer. Will the curse of the vampire prevent James and Sarah from living their happily ever after?

Despite the obstacles of their secrets, James and Sarah fall in love. As James comes to terms with his feelings for Sarah, he must dodge accusations from a reporter desperate to prove that James is not who, or what, he seems to be. Soon James and Sarah piece their stories together and discover a mystery that may bind them in ways they never imagined. Will James make the ultimate sacrifice to protect Sarah and prevent a new hunt from bringing hysteria to Salem again?

Part historical fiction, part romance, part paranormal fantasy, Her Dear & Loving Husband is a story for anyone who believes that true love never dies.
