He tilted his head. "You look older."

She forced herself to blink and to remember her goal. "Then I assume I am at last old enough to be a fit for a demon." She stepped forward, stopping less than a foot away from him. The back of her throat dried out, and she swallowed.

He put his hand to his chin, his gaze taking her in. "This old song and dance. When will you use the brains you have and leave it alone?"

His words hit her, but rather than retreating, she moved closer. The energy, the tingle, the wafts of spice encompassed her and lured her toward him. "Never."

"You were smart last time. Why don't you release me so I can do what I came here for." He glanced down at her and then shifted his focus beyond her. "I have needs as well."

"Tonight I am the one you came here for." The mention of his last visit stung, but she willed herself to keep going. She ran her fingers up the buttons of his shirt. "You always told me to take control."

He shook his head. "A lesson you learned well."

She reached up and clenched his collar in her fist. "I let you go last time, but tonight I am the one you need."

He grabbed her wrist. "I spared you before. Never forget that."

She stared right into his eyes. No weakness was allowed tonight. "It's me, Dolan. Me, or you can be celibate until the decade I do you the favor of dying. I don't care about your pain." She tensed, preparing herself for his retaliation.

"I thought I taught you better than to make demands of a demon." He pressed his palm to the side of her face.

Heat radiated through her body, sending a warning to every one of her nerve endings. "A demon who comforts a child is a failure of a demon in my book."

His jaw tightened. "That was a mistake. An oversight."

As we follow Danielle on her journey of terror and recovery, we see her story intersect with the diary entries of her Nana as a young girl held captive in a concentration camp.  The entries begin with Rose waking up in a hospital after the liberation of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp.    Graphically she recounts the train ride to the camp and the emotional separation of her from her family upon arrival.    And the full weight of the family’s secrets becomes clear. This is a story of survival, self-discovery, justice, and ultimately, it’s about love.

? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? 

For fun, I started writing short stories in third grade.  And I always had the bug to write but not the time.

? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?

Though writing is my passion, I am a full time attorney.

? How long does it take you to write a book?

I have written four self-help books before my novel.  And that process is a lot faster.  Likewise, Against My Will took well over a year.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk? 

I jog every morning and race home with ideas that came into my mind.

? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?

The character of Irene is based on my client, Irene Opdyke whom I represented.  The other characters all come from persons I met sometime in my life.

? How do you decide what you want to write about?

I look for a theme that includes social issues.  And then I bounce it off my adult children for their knee jerk reaction.

? What books have most influenced your life?

Memoirs and autobiographies.

? What are you reading right now?

 I am not reading right now as I am too busy writing.

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?

 Tennis and playing with my grandkids but not necessarily in that order.

? What is your favorite comfort food?

Licorice if that can be considered a comfort food.

? What do you think makes a good story?

If the story reads like a play or movie.  That is, I like my characters to seem so real that the reader feels that they are in the room with him.

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?

 Warren Adler, author of War of the Roses and many more.  I had the pleasure of spending time with him and his advice was so meaningful.

My thoughts:
I wasn't sure what to expect from this story; a story written by a man about control, love, self-discovery and survival.  I was pleased by the story that unfolded on the pages as I turned them.  I was impressed with the author's desire to write a story about a topic that is somewhat taboo and his ability to write such a story with such a profound understanding.

I understand the desire to do what you feel your parent(s) want and what "seems" like the right thing for your life.  So I was not surprised by the fact that Danielle gets married, even with the reservations that she had.  

It took me a bit to get the nature of the interspersed diary entries and put together that they belonged to her grandmother.  I would have liked a bit more clarification about time frames in the diary, I felt that I was missing out on the rest of the story.  It seemed as if there should have been something about getting out of the hospital and moving on with her life.  That being said, the similarities in the situations was an interesting twist.  

I loved the insight about love that Rose gives and how that comes through as Danielle moves on with her life.  I liked that she was able to find closure to her own situation through the court case that she takes.  

The relationship between Cliff and his job and Danielle and her grandmother's past is a great addition and truly makes the story.  That the author introduces them on her flight from her present and then re-introduces Cliff into her future by helping her sort out the past is brilliant.

The story is filled with emotion, growth, courage and the insurmountable ability of the spirit to survive.  My favorite part of the entire book is when Danielle gets to meet Irene and her phrase, "Save one life, seed a generation."  In her saving Rose, one life, she seeded many a generation to come. 

Inspiring and insightful, this was a wonderful story.

My thoughts:
I truly enjoyed My Familiar Stranger (book one) and was looking forward to getting back to the series and the characters that I fell in love with.  I was a little worried, because of how much I liked book one, but needn't have - book two is as good as book one.  
We meet new characters and they are as well done as expected - carefully created with all those things you look and fall for, making you feel like you know them and are right there with them.  The story line is wonderful, intriguing and entertaining with just enough romance and action.  I love Victoria Dannann's writing style and her use of language, a bonafide wordsmith!  I can't wait to get started on book three!

Nicole R. Taylor is an Australian born paranormal, fantasy and contemporary fiction author. She is a graduate of the University of Ballarat Professional Writing and Editing programme and is a former music memorabilia sales person and grocery merchandiser.

She currently lives in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia with a two year old rescue cat named, Burger. She enjoys reading, writing (of course!), traveling and a little too much chocolate. One day she hopes to sky dive, but has to work up the courage first.
