Curiosity Killed the Kat by Elizabeth Nelson
Amazon Product Description:
Katherine (“Kat”) thought she had the perfect marriage to International Lawyer Steven Flynn. Until he tried to kill her. Katherine was the perfect obedient wife. She would do anything for her husband. That is, until she discovers he’s the ring leader of a human trafficking organization. The action is fast and furious, the dialogue smart and the sex scenes hot. Meet Katherine in Curiosity Killed The Kat as she goes farther and farther down the rabbit hole of political intrigue, sex, and revenge. Will she let herself be saved by love or will curiosity and a thirst for killer justice kill the Kat?
My thoughts:
This is a fast read. The writing is descriptive and the character building is top notch. It was almost as if I could feel how slimy Kat thought her husband's boss was. I know I disliked her husband from the go, and he never redeemed himself (obviously). The plot was intriguing, but the story could have been fleshed out a bit more. It was almost as if we were running through the story, it's fast paced, only to end up dangling at the edge of the cliff that becomes the ending. I am not saying that it's bad, just that I wanted more story. It is well written and entertaining. Worth the read for certain. Will be looking forward to reading both book 2 and book 3 which are already out.

Blog Tour: Smoke and Mirrors by Marie Treanor
This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.

Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour.
It is my pleasure to feature:
Marie Treanor and Smoke and Mirrors.
Marie has stopped by for an interview!
? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I
was a small child J.
? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
Hmm,
let’s see, I was an Editorial Assistant, a librarian (twice) and a researcher.
I suppose that’s four, not counting voluntary jobs, summer jobs and Saturday
jobs.
? How long does it take you to write a book?
Funnily
enough, I’ve just discovered that if I don’t get out of bed until 2 or 3 in the
afternoon, and just write, I can get through a first draft in three weeks,
which is how I wrote the sequel to SMOKE AND MIRRORS J. It doesn’t make for comfortable living and my
family goes feral, but it can be done!
Under
more normal circumstances, it takes about three months for a full length book,
if all goes well and real life co-operates. I may go back to it after that for
one more self-editing pass, but it should be in at least reasonable nick by
this time!
Novellas
and short stories can take as little as one to four weeks, if all goes well!
? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame
of mind to write?
No,
I’ve never quite got out of the way of grabbing any and every opportunity!
Stems from the days of trying to write while at work or looking after children!
? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
From
all sorts of places – a face on a train, a snippet from a book, a few words
overheard, a bit of history or an atmospheric building or ruin. I once wrote a
story (THE DEVIL AND VIA), inspired by an item of news in Italy when I was on
holiday there, about how priests were being trained to deal with disaffected
young people who’d turned to Satanism. And KILLING JOE popped into my head with
a television advert!
Others
have a longer simmering time: BLOOD ON SILK and the other AWAKENED BY BLOOD
books grew at least partly out of my longstanding love of gothic romance novels
and Dracula films. Then one day Saloman appeared in my head, arising from his
tomb and advancing on my terrified heroine through the dust J.
SMOKE
AND MIRRORS – and in fact the whole GIFTED series – grew out of a character
that formed without warning my head: a charismatic villain who was more than he
seemed. He grew quickly into Rodion Kosar and everyone else, my psychic-denying
heroine included, formed around him.
? How do you decide what you want to write about?
I think
the story decides for me! I write the one that wants to be written most J.
? What books have most influenced your life?
I
suppose the ones I read as a kid that made me want to be a writer: adventure
stories mainly, by Enid Blyton, then Malcolm Saville. Jane Eyre made a big,
early impression too.
Then
Georgette Heyer’s The Masqueraders introduced me to a whole new world of fun and
I was addicted to all kinds of historical. Loved The Stranger Prince by
Margaret Irwin. And The Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett blew me away. All her
books do! The epic scale of War and Peace inspired me too. They
also inspired in me a love of history which I went on to study at university,
where I met most of my best friends of today.
Reading
Dracula
was another turning point. The idea and the weird sensuality of vampires began
to fascinate me, and I sought out all the vampire books I could find. Anne
Rice’s Interview with the Vampire made a HUGE impression that’s still
with me.
Later,
I discovered ebooks and paranormal romance. I think it was Ciar Cullen’s Ghosts
of Key West (now re-published as Key West Magic) that opened my mind
to the possibilities of the romance genre.
? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?
Enid
Blyton’s Book of Fairies J.
? What are you reading right now?
Helen
by Maria Edgeworth who was a contemporary of Jane Austen.
? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I like
to read, watch films, spend time with my family and friends. I love travelling
too, seeing new places and spending time in the sun J.
? What is your favorite comfort food?
Cake.
Chocolate. Ice cream…Mmm.
? What do you think makes a good story?
Appealing
characters, good pace and fine, evocative writing.
? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
The
late Dorothy Dunnett, a Scottish historical novelist, although she also wrote
some very fun and quirky thrillers. She just tells a wonderful story, with
characters who get under your skin, and settings that spring to life. Her
writing is clear and witty, often understated and yet tugs at your emotions
? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?
I tend
not to re-read books very much now, unless I discover a sequel and find I’ve
forgotten important parts of the book that came before! I did go through a
phase of re-reading Georgette Heyer for the sheer escapism, but I haven’t done
that for years – there are too many new books out there that I’m desperate to
read!
Fun
random questions:
- dogs or cats? Dogs
- Coffee or tea? Coffee
- Dark or milk chocolate?
Both, please! And if you could manage some white in there too, I’d be
forever grateful…
- Rocks or flowers?
Flowers
- Night or day? Got to
have both!
- Favorite color? Red
- Crayons or markers?
Neither
- Pens or pencils? Both

Deceit and desire, and a
treasure beyond price...
When struggling Scottish writer Nell Black
accepts a one-off job with the police, translating for an arson suspect from
the isolated ex-Soviet republic of Zavrekestan, she stumbles into a terrifying
world of organized crime and paranormal abilities that turns her whole belief
system upside down. Faced with an incomparable thief, hit men who spontaneously
combust, gangsters, drug dealers, British Intelligence and a fiery goddess,
Nell no longer knows who to trust. The man who saves her life is a criminal to whom
deceit is second nature. He has more smoke screens and more plans in motion
than anyone else can keep track of. He is, moreover, probably insane. Even his
fellow gangsters are afraid of him. So why is he the one man Nell wants to
touch her?
Rodion Kosar is in trouble. His convoluted plans
all lead to one goal - the retrieval of his treasure - and to achieve that, he
needs Nell to believe he isn't the bad guy. He has many reasons beyond his own
desires to make love to her. Especially when a plan goes wrong and he has to
play dead before someone really kills him - either the police, the menacing
Russian crime lord known as the Bear, or the powerful Guardian of the Gifted
whom he's defied once too often. Nell's burgeoning gift of second sight could
be his best route to the treasure, and yet keeping her with him spells danger.
For Nell has her own agenda, her own mission, and she could just as easily
cause his final downfall.
* * * * * *
Nell followed Sergeant Lamont inside, to where a
group of people sat around a rather bashed-up table, ornamented only by a
crushed packet of cigarettes. Lamont clearly felt time was of the essence,
because even as he pulled a chair forward for Nell, he was speaking, combining
the social politeness of introductions with naming those present for the police
recording.
His police colleague, seated beside him, was a
young detective constable called Livingstone. The suspect’s solicitor on the
opposite side of the table was Gregor Gallini. Nell’s chair was squashed in at
the end of the table, with Gallini on one side and Lamont on the other.
The suspect himself, Kolnikov, lounged next to
his lawyer. Nell found herself in no hurry to face him. Instead, she
concentrated on sitting down and arranging her coat and bag, giving quick
smiles and nods to everyone else as they were introduced. Her first impression
of the suspect, gained from half glances and glimpses from the corner of her
eye, was of long legs in blue jeans, a sloppy grey sweatshirt with the sleeves
pushed up to the elbow to reveal colourful tattoos among the golden hairs on
his forearms. And a sort of shimmering light—burning amber and gold—like an
aura.
Nell didn’t believe in auras, largely because
she’d never taken to the sort of people who talked about them. Therefore, she’d
always felt slightly ashamed of the fact that she occasionally imagined
different coloured outlines around some people, usually from exactly this kind
of half glance. When she looked properly, the “aura” had always gone.
Imagination combined with nerves, of course, and tonight she had an excuse for
both.
“And Nell Black, translator,” Lamont finished,
“present at the request of Mr. Kolnikov.”
“What are her qualifications?” Gallini demanded
at once. “She must be fluent in Zavreki.”
“I am,” Nell said mildly. She reached into her
bag and brought out copies of her degrees and diplomas. Although she was aware
of Kolnikov’s gaze upon her, she passed the documents to the solicitor, who
pushed them nearer to his client so that they could both view them. In the belief
she would now have a free, if brief moment to examine the suspect, she lifted
her gaze to his face. Mistake.
It was a bit like falling out of a tree when she
was a kid: a sense of dizziness, followed swiftly by a thud that sucked all the
air out of her lungs. Not because he was particularly good-looking—although he
was, all straight, sharp lines and shaggy blond hair—but because his hard,
intense blue eyes were staring right at her, as if he could see into every
corner of her existence. She prayed he couldn’t.
At least there was no “aura” now.
His lips separated, and he spoke in Zavreki.
“How come?”
The words were brief, without emphasis, and yet
they threw her. Perhaps it was his voice, quiet and deep as dark velvet, that
made her shiver.
“How come what?” she demanded.
“How come you speak my language?”
“My mother came from Zavrekestan.”
He picked up the packet of cigarettes from the
table. “And they say you can never escape,” he said flippantly.
“You’re here, aren’t you?”
“Out of the frying pan, into the fire,” he
observed, placing a cigarette between his lips. His hands were large but
slender, his fingers long and oddly elegant compared to the rest of his
flung-together if attractive appearance. He wore no rings, no wristwatch. And
the tattoos licking down his forearms to his wrists were flames. Bizarre.
Though no reason to arrest someone for arson.
“I’ve told you, there’s no smoking in here, Mr.
Kolnikov,” Lamont said impatiently. “Can we get on? I take it you’re happy to
have Miss Black as your translator?” He fixed Nell with his gaze, and she
almost jumped with the realization that her job had now begun.
Hastily, she translated Lamont’s words, and
Kolnikov threw the cigarette down on the table. “Hit me.”

This blog tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
Welcome to The Wormhole!
Today I am pleased to feature an interview with author Jacqueline Paige.
? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
Oh my, there are too many to count. I’ve worked retail, factories and
hospitality. I’ve been the lowly line slug and happy cashier to the lead hand,
supervisor and manager. I’ve had my own businesses, partnerships and family
endeavors … I’m definitely a Jacq of all trades.
? How long does it take you to write a book?
It can take me anywhere from 20 days to a
year. For the ones that take 20-30 days,
my hands are sore, arms hurt and my brain is mush when I’m finished! The ones that take longer usually means I’m
working on more than one at a time. If I
didn’t have that silly day job thing, I’d write 24/7 for sure.
? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
I honestly can’t pinpoint that. The oddest things will give me a great idea
and sometimes without much thought I have another character running around in
my head pushing to the front of the line to have their story told. I’ve had a complete character story pop into
my head just by seeing an object or picture.
? How do you decide what you want to write about?
More often than not a character will come
to mind and then I have to unravel their story.
Occasionally though I’ll have this idea of a plot and have to spend some
time finding the right characters for it.
I always have more than one story in my mind, it’s the one that keeps me
awake that gets told first.
? What are you reading right now?
I actually just found the time to go out
and get Christine Feehan’s Dark Storm. I can’t wait to read it! I love her
Carpathians.
? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Sleep.
Boring, I know but it’s the truth.
I’m a manager and work too many hours in a week, on call roughly 17
hours of every day, so when I get the chance I like to sleep. Unfortunately, I still only manage an average
4 hours of that every 24 hours or so. L
? What do you think makes a good story?
I like when a story makes me think. I also like a story that leaves just a little
bit at the end to make wonder. Giving me
all the answers and tying everything into a nice neat bow at the end doesn’t
make me want to read more from that author.
? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
I’m not sure I have one favorite. I can narrow it down to two, Christine Feehan
and Sherrilyn Kenyon. Why … because seriously
I don’t know where they come up with their ideas but I’m pretty sure there
isn’t much that haven’t had a character do, and if there is I’m sure both
authors will cross that bridge and wow us some more.

Book Description:When fourteen-year-old Keth's dad is transferred to planet Aleyne, he doesn't know what to expect. Certainly not to discover Dad grew up here, and studied with Ardaval, a noted Aleyni scholar. On Aleyne, Keth’s psi ability develops. However, psi is illegal in the Terran Federation. After a dangerous encounter with two Terran teenagers conflict erupts between Keth and his father. Keth seeks sanctuary with Ardaval. Studying with the Aleyne scholar Keth learns the truth about his own heritage. After Keth's friend's father, Mazos, is kidnapped, Keth ignores the risks and attempts to free him. Little does he realize who will pay the cost as he becomes involved with terrorists.
Excerpt:
“What do you mean I must
undergo a psi exam? The Terran Federation legislates against any use of
psi." The speaker, a human woman with wild gray hair, glared at the
immigration official.
I gazed at the official. Like most Aleyni, he
stood over six feet, slender, with extra wide hands, and thumbs able to bend
all the way back. His head appeared more oval than humans, too, and he showed
almost no external ears. His skin appeared almost black, like Dad’s and mine,
and hers appeared pale. His dark skin provided a welcome spot of color against
the general gray of the space port interior. The temperature felt pleasant
enough, though; nicely warm instead of the chill of the Terran Federation space
station circling above Aleyne.
He could have been reading a
laundry list. “Madam, Aleyne is a sovereign planet, not part of the Terran
Federation, and if you want to clear immigration you must undergo a psi exam.”
He pushed a data cube toward her. “Either sign the consent form and undergo the
exam, or go back up to the space station.” He added, “Take it or leave it,” in
Aleyni. No one else noticed.
She threw the data cube on the
floor, stomped, and it shattered into fragments. “I won’t do it. I don’t want
any aliens screwing around in my head.”
The official stared at her for a moment. “It’s against our ethics
to screw around.”
The woman crossed her arms. “I don’t believe you.”
“You can return to the space station and
take the next ship out.” The official’s face revealed nothing, and his gray
eyes stared straight at her. His hands hung loose at his side. I considered him
a model of polite behavior, considering. I would have punched her.
The woman stared at him. Her
head tilted up, because she barely made five feet. Her face, which wore a
ferocious frown, turned bright red. Maybe she disliked dark skin, or maybe she
simply hated Aleynis.
“I’m going.” She spat the
words, turned, glared at us, and marched down the corridor. I glanced back and
noticed her arguing with a Space Force officer. The expression on his face
would have curdled milk.
Dad prodded me. “Keth, come
on.” He grabbed two data cubes, scanned them, and signed both. The official
passed both of them through his reader and put one through a slot. “How old is
the boy?”
“I’m fourteen Terran standard
years. That makes me sixteen in Aleyni years. The Aleyni year is shorter than
ours.”
“You need to consent for
yourself.” He passed me a new cube and I signed.
The official threw it away and
handed me another. “Read first and then sign.”
I sighed loudly and read the whole thing, both the top half,
in Aleyni, and the bottom, in English Common Speech. I started to compare the
two, noticing how much clearer informed consent appeared in the Aleyni version,
when Dad prodded me. I signed the form and returned the cube to the official.
“Okay, I read it.”
The
official smiled and pushed it through the slot after Dad’s.
I wasn’t scared, since Dad told
me about the need to take a psi exam. The Aleyni checked for any kind of plant
or animal, or whether we planned a terrorist attack. Dad said Federation
anti-psi fanatics attacked a couple of times recently, so I understood why they
checked carefully.
The examiner set me in a chair.
He asked me again if I consented to the exam. When I said yes, the examiner put
his hands on the sides of my face, looking into my eyes.
His hands burned hot against my
skin. A thousand ants chewed through my brain and a voice whispered questions I
couldn’t quite make out. I tried to take a breath, but my throat tightened, and
I gasped aloud. I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to stop shaking. I shook my
head, trying to make the voices go away, and the examiner removed his hands and
stared into my eyes for a moment. The buzzing voices stopped, leaving my head
feeling as though it would burst open. The examiner smiled at me and passed me
through the checkpoint. A couple of minutes went by before my stomach stopped
heaving, but hammers still pounded inside my head.

Can he have her without succumbing to the responsibilities waiting for him?
An Excerpt to feed your need to read:
If nothing else she was warmer now. How long would the rain last? Do I want to wait it out and then try to find a washroom – in the dark? Rayne shook her head before she could go any further with that thought. There was no way she was getting out of this car until it was light out, rain or no rain. How many hours until daylight? She debated very briefly whether she could squirm around and reach the purse to get her phone. Highly doubtful. Besides being cocooned in the puffy material, the phone was off for a reason and turning it on just to check the time wasn’t worth the risk of Aiden being able to trace the location. Truthfully she didn’t know if that was possible even though all the movies referenced it being so, but understanding what type of man Aiden was and what he was capable of, she wasn’t taking any chances.
Working one arm free from the bag, she shifted far enough forward to reach the ignition; he couldn’t track the cars clock. Turning the key, her heart sunk when she noted the time, there were too many hours left until dawn. She looked out the windshield and froze, her heart jumped into her throat. Afraid to so much as breathe, Rayne stared at the animal a few feet away from the headlight. Her brain first said dog, but that was no dog. That was a wolf; it had to be a wolf. Were wolves that big? It seemed bigger than in any pictures she’d seen.
She sat there looking at it, not sure if she should honk the horn or just sit and try not to get hysterical waiting for it to leave. The car may be metal, but the roof was something this animal could probably get through. As she continued to stare at it she couldn’t help thinking it was a beautiful creature. It’s grey and brown fur looked soft and thick, not that she’d ever be able to find out if it was. It was the way the haunting grey eyes watched her that made her decide not to honk the horn or scream as loud as she could, which had crossed her mind briefly. Rayne was fairly certain it was as surprised to see her as she was to see it. Didn’t wolves travel as group? A pack? She wanted to look around and see if there were more in the trees, but the logical part of her brain said she was better off not knowing. Never argue with the logical part.
She was sure she stopped breathing all together when it took a step closer to the car and then turned quickly back towards the trees. As she was reaching for the keys it stopped and looked back at her for the length of two heart beats before it bolted into the trees and disappeared.
Turning off the key, she sat in the dark leaning back against the seat while she tried to remind her body how to take air in. In this moment with her heart beating so loud she could hear it, or at least it felt that way, Rayne reached the decision that she was not getting out of the car until daylight, and even then was questionable. One more conclusion was also not turning the lights on again; her mental state was much better not knowing what else was outside of the car. She checked to make sure the door was locked, she did know a wolf wouldn’t just walk up and use the door handle, but she felt better knowing that she was locked in and more importantly other things were locked out.
Pulling her arm back into the sleeping bag, Rayne shuffled down as far as she could and closed her eyes. The sooner she slept, the closer daylight was to getting here. Over the noise of the water beating off the car, she thought she heard a howl.
