? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Hard to say. It was an unscratched itch that my career choice of medicine kept me from alleviating. I seemed to be one of those unattainable desires until one day I figured what the hell, start to work on it. There was no epiphany moment.

? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?

From high school through residency I was 100% goal-directed at medicine. Still am. Being a writer was done in parallel.

? How long does it take you to write a book?

Impossible to say because I always have about three concepts brewing either in the back of my mind, or more formally, on paper. And then there are always the rewrites, line edits etc before the book is actually done. Probably from concept to finished product, about a year and a half.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Not sure I have quirks. For me writing just hard work.

? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?

From people I encounter in daily life. Being a physician gave me ample opportunity to see some real characters.

? How do you decide what you want to write about?

Of the concepts brewing, I select the one that seems to be the most developed and would have the most general appeal.

? What books have most influenced your life?

Marathon Man and Vertical Run were the two thrillers that cemented me into the genre.

? What are you reading right now?

Funny you should ask. It’s a sci-fi by Richard Morgan. I don’t read much sci-fi but this was recommended to me by a friend whose tastes are similar to mine, so I started this one. Really enjoying it.

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?

My wife and I have a beautiful Japanese style garden that requires a ton of attention. I’m also into digital photography and amateur radio. I’m very geeky.

? What is your favorite comfort food?

Buffalo Wings.

? What do you think makes a good story?

Tons of suspense in a story line that keeps moving like a freight train.

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?

John Sandford. Love his style and characters. Read everything he’s done.

Amber Polo has stopped by for an interview:

What did you do before you became a full-time writer? 

I was a librarian, in both public and university libraries, and then became a yoga teacher. In some ways being an English major and then getting my MLS may have discouraged my own writing. Always being surrounded by wonderful books can discourage trying to write your own. I think my yoga practice became the wonderful transition to open my own creativity.

What’s your most interesting writing quirk?

It’s interesting that you use the word “quirk.” My writing’s often been called quirky. When I need to write a scene or get my characters out of trouble I pick up my AlphaSmart (sort of a wireless keyboard that doesn’t receive email or connect to the internet or offer distractions), put my hands on the keys, and the characters tell their story. Sometimes what they say is a complete surprise to me. 

Where did you get the idea for The Shapeshifters Library?

I have always been passionate about libraries and also learned a lot about dogs during the time I was active in training and showing. I loved writing fantasy and paranormal romance. Noticing all the shifter stories (cats, dragons, and lots of werewolves), I wondered why there were no dog shifter stories. Surely dogs were noble, caring creatures that in human form would be interesting and lots of fun. So, I put dogs, librarians, and fantasy together and out came dog-shifters. And added a few werewolves to provide conflict.

How long does it take you to write a book?

It seems like a full length novel takes a year - especially the first two of my fantasy series because there is so much to research and details to layer. I try to make sure there’s plenty of humor and book references. I’m hoping book 3 writes itself faster.

What are you reading? 

I love a good book in almost any genre. The Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Jennifer Weiner’s The Next Best Thing were two recent delightful escapes. I’m reading A Fistful of Collars by Spenser Quinn. Waiting for me are Jasper Forde’s The Woman Who Died A Lot (a bookish fantasy), 12.21 by Dustin Thomson, and The Portrait of Doreen Gray, a Chihuahua mystery by Esri Allbritten. I am also an audiobook addict.

What book, if any, do you read over and over again?

I seldom re-read a book. There are so many out there and as we all know - so little time.

Do you have any pets?

I don’t have any pets right now, but I recently went through old photos and scanned my favorite dog pictures and posted a slideshow on my website. It reminded me of living with five Old English Sheepdogs (at one time) The hero of Book One of The Shapeshifters Library is a dog-shifter (Old English Sheepdog/librarian) Most of the photos are of my dogs but there’s one cat picture of note showing how I trained a cat to jump through a hoop like a lion. I’d trained dogs and figured if lions could do it through flaming hoops my two kittens could make it through an embroidery hoop. And they did.

“I’m going to kill her.” I didn’t throw the phone across the room like I wanted to, but instead, set it down gently on the coffee table. I took a deep breath and held it for a long moment before releasing it. “I’ll just have to owe Williams another favor.”

“That would put you at owing him three times, which is three times too many.” Theo slid the phone out of my reach. I’d already thrown two phones this month, so I didn’t begrudge him the action. “What exactly did Danie do this time?”

It’d been almost a month since Williams had shown up in the foyer and left his niece—Hart’s daughter—in my care. Not that I really wanted her here or that she wanted to be here. Things were just getting back to normal after the terror of Halloween, after darting around the city trying to find Hart’s other psychopathic brother. Having Hart’s daughter under my roof made me more than a little uneasy, even though he was still at the bottom of the Mississippi.

I’d argued with Williams. Danie had argued with Williams. Even Mickeal, Williams’s second-in-command and currently stationed at the Crossroads, had argued with Williams. He refused to budge. And my conscience wouldn’t let me throw her out without a definite place to go.

So Danie stayed. And did her best to make all our lives a living hell.

“Shoplifting. Again.” I drummed my fingers over my stomach, then stopped when one of the bumps kicked a little. Theo and I still called them the bumps, even though it was starting to look like I’d swallowed a small beach ball. At the rate I was going, I’d be as big as a cow by the time I delivered in May. “Down at that tourist shop.”

“Which one? There’s only half a million or so.” Theo made a little circle motion with his finger and I gave him my back. I always seemed to have a knot between my shoulder blades these days. Whether it was from Danie or from the bumps, I couldn’t begin to guess.

“Voodoo Blues. The owner recognized her, so instead of calling the police, he let her go and called me. I’ll send Elizabeth down tomorrow to take care of it.”

“Have you ever thought about letting her get picked up by the police? Seeing if having the law come down on her would actually make her see how stupid she’s being?” Theo pressed a kiss against my bare shoulder. I shrugged half-heartedly, tapping my fingers on my knee.

“Maybe it would work. Or maybe she’d go nuts on them and then we’d have a serious problem.” Restless now, I stood up to pace in front of the fireplace. It was just now ten p.m. and most of the house had been up long enough to start getting into trouble. Any minute now, someone was going to knock on the parlor door and tell me they needed help with something.

I wasn’t psychic. It had happened often enough that it was a given.

My thoughts:

Another great story by L.M. Pruitt!  Action, adventure, romance, good vs. evil - a little bit of everything that makes a reader thrilled to keep turning the pages.  The characters are wonderful!  The relationships are tricky and endearing.  The interaction between the characters keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.  The reality of "the bumps" is an intriguing twist!  I can't wait for more!

Drew let me be until snowflakes began to drift down from the sky. “Come on, Chloe. We have to go now.”

With tears still staining my cheeks, I gave my mother‟s grave one last caress and then stood. “All right, I‟m ready.”

Drew took my hand again and led me between the plots as best as we could manage. The air outside had chilled even more than when we arrived. It was cold. Really cold. When we approached the gates, warmth suddenly filled my stomach and spread through my body.

“Oh, my… what the heck?” I clutched my stomach as the tingling spread all the way into my fingertips.

“Are you okay?” Drew asked. “What‟s wrong?”

“I don‟t know.” I shook my head. Tears threatened to surface again. “I don‟t know.”

“It‟s your senses, Chloe, telling you something is off.”

Drew and I both spun around and Drew whipped his gun out from underneath his jacket.

“Who are you?” Drew yelled.

There, sitting atop one of the gravestones, bathed in the green glow of florescent lights, was a woman. Even though it was freezing, she barely wore anything, and what she did have on looked like leather wrapped around her body and a halter top with crude lacing holding it together. Snowflakes drifted down and passed through her tanned skin, dissolving into nowhere.

“How do you know me?” I shouted. “Who are you?”

My stomach was still flooded with warmth, and it made me feel like I had to pee. I wished I had brought my gun.

She clicked her tongue and tossed a wave of dark brown hair over her shoulder. “You do not need your weapons, my children. I do not come to harm.”

She slid off the gravestone, and I watched her bare feet sink into the snow. They left no footprints.

“Who are you?” Drew demanded again.

She moved forward slowly. “I am your mother, many times over.”

This chick scared me. Was she a ghost? I moved backward a few steps as she approached, using Drew as a shield, since he had the gun.

She smiled, her dark eyes intently focusing on Drew. “Andrew, lower your weapon. You cannot harm me.”

As if under a spell, Drew lowered his arms and his gun came to rest by his side. “What do you want?”

“I am here to help, Chloe.” She nodded at me and smiled. “You need the help of your ancestors. Your mother cannot help you, so I have come to give you guidance.”

The warmth in my stomach turned into fire in my heart. I can‟t explain it, but I felt the connection with this apparition. I moved out from behind Drew.

“Who are you?” I whispered.

She lifted her chin arrogantly. “I am Sostrate, the daughter of Artemis, and as I have told you already, your mother, many times over.”

“Why are you here?”

“I have come to give you the guidance your mother cannot give you. It is my duty.”

“Are you a ghost?”

She only shook her head and gave me a crooked grin. “I am a demi-goddess. I gained immortality from my mother. I do not come as an apparition, because I cannot die.”

“Holy shit.” Drew actually dropped his gun in the snow.

I moved forward, not afraid anymore. I knew she was who she said she was. As we approached each other, I stretched out my hand, wanting to touch her. She also extended her hand and as my gloved fingers connected with the solid fingertips of hers, I gasped. “You‟re real.”

She nodded. “Of course.”

“Sostrate,” I pulled my hand from hers, “How can you help me?”

“Chloe, it is time that you think with a clear head. Revenge has taken over your heart and your soul, taken over so much of you that you cannot possibly win this battle. It takes more than thinking with your brain. You must fight with love,” she pressed her fist against her heart “not only hatred.”

“I don‟t understand,” I told her.

“Wars are not won because of hatred for the enemy; they are won because of love for what is being defended.”

Book Release! Perception by Lee Strauss

It is my pleasure to present: Lee Strauss and Perception!

Lee Strauss writes historical and science fiction upper/mature Young Adult fiction. She also writes lighter, lower Young Adult fiction under the name Elle Strauss. She's a married mother of four, and divides her time between Germany and Canada. She's fond of Lindt's sea salt dark chocolate and hiking in good weather.

? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I started writing when my youngest child was a toddler. I’m a late bloomer.

? How long does it take you to write a book?

It used to take me several years but now I can write on in 3-4 months.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I’m a terrible speller

? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?

Not really. I just do what I have to do each day whether it’s writing, editing or marketing.

? What books have most influenced your life?

For fiction I’d say Pride and Prejudice. Non-fiction, the Bible

? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?

The Adventures of Reddy Fox by Thornton Burgess

? What are you reading right now?

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Read, cycle, hike, eat

? What is your favorite comfort food?

Dark chocolate with almonds.

? What do you think makes a good story?

Well developed characters and a compelling plot.

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?

I’m going to tip my hat to Jane Austin again because I have to many living author friends J, plus she was a strong women who made it in a business dominated by men.

? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?

My TBR pile is too large to have time to read a book more than once.

      PERCEPTION is a ( SF/mystery/romance) Young Adult novel that takes place in the not too distant future in a world changed by climate extremes, natural disasters and impending wars, and where scientific breakthroughs cause class divisions—both financially and philosophically.  It explores the clash between faith and science and how differences can separate us as enemies or alliance us together. And in some cases, even in the midst of betrayal and personal crisis, there’s room to fall in love.

      This is the first book in a planned three book series. 

Seventeen year old Zoe Vanderveen is a GAP—a genetically altered person. She lives in the security of a walled city on prime water-front property along side other equally beautiful people with extended life spans.

Her brother Liam is missing.
