Blog Tour: Pride's Run by Cat Kalen (International Giveaway!)

This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
You can see the entire tour schedule by clicking HERE.
You can read my review by clicking HERE.
Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour!
It is with great pleasure that I present Cat Kalen and Pride's Run!

? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I was always an avid reader but hadn’t thought about writing until later in life.  I went to university and completed a Business Degree.  I started working in the finance department for Environment Canada, but it was after my hubby was posted up North (population 800) and I ran out of books that I first tried my hand at writing.
? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
I worked many part time jobs when I was in university but my first real job was with Environment Canada.  Once I left that and became a full time writer I never looked back.

? How long does it take you to write a book?
It varies, but I’d say around 6 months.  I think the hardest part is coming up with a  high concept, unique idea.  Once I have that and have it all plotted out it’s off to the races.

? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
Hmm, not sure, perhaps it’s the four hundred sticky notes I have everywhere so I don’t forget things, but then I can never find the right note when I need it.

? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
After I see the kids of in the morning, I work out, shower, eat and then hit the computer.  I write from appx 10 am to 4 pm.

? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
Ideas come from all over.  An overheard conversation (yes I eavesdrop all the time) television, commercials, newspapers, dreams…

? How do you decide what you want to write about?
When a character really speaks to me, I know I need to tell their story.

? What books have most influenced your life?
To Kill a Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies and Catcher in the Rye.  These books totally kidnapped me!

? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself?
Goodness, I can’t even remember what I had for dinner last night.  LOL.

? What are you reading right now?
I’m reading fins are forever Tera Lynn Childs

? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I love reading, gardening, walking and going to the movies.  I love going out for dinner and drinks with friends.  I love to watch my son play soccer, to bake or shop with my daughter and in the evenings the think I like to do most is hang out with my hubby..

? What is your favorite comfort food?
Chocolate brownies…Yummy.

? What do you think makes a good story?
Likeable characters that I care about and can root for!

? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
Honestly, I have so many and it changes all the time.   Right now I do love Suzanne Collins and her Hunger Games series.  I can’t wait for the movie!

? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?
Hunger Games!

Fun random questions:
  • dogs or cats? Dog.
  • Coffee or tea? Both.
  • Dark or milk chocolate? Milk.
  • Rocks or flowers? Flowers.
  • Night or day? Day.
  • Favorite color? Varies, today it’s blue.
  • Crayons or markers? Markers.
  • Pens or pencils? Pen.

Blog Tour: Cyberlife by W.H. Buxton

Welcome to The Wormhole!

This virtual book tour is presented by Pump Up Your Book Tours.

It is my pleasure to feature W.H. Buxton and his debut book Cyberlife
About W.H. Buxton
chip and bonnie (2)Winslow Buxton is a retired Navy Commander and helicopter pilot who received his Masters of Science in Information Technology and Management from the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a Knowledge Systems Architect Consultant, helping multiple Navy and Air Force Commands initiate and develop their Knowledge Management Programs. He currently resides in Gulf Breeze, Florida with his wife, Bonnie.
CyberLife is his first novel.

About CyberLife

CyberLife Cover for Tracee Gleichner (2)The year is 2069 and Jim Murphy thinks he has the world pretty much figured out, as a Knowledge Management Consultant (whatever that is!) muddling through various technology consulting jobs. That is, until his company, SciPop Inc., assigns him to work a particularly unusual project involving the acquisition of a small backpacking and hiking services business owned by techno-hater Laura Meyers.
Jim, however, never works alone. He, like everyone else in the world, is armed with the ultimate technology super-support tool: a personalized, artificially intelligent, holographic Virtual Life form, more commonly known as a Vertal, named Jasper.
Just as Jim lives, works and socializes in the physical world; Jasper lives, works, and socializes in the Cybersphere, coexisting and coordinating on behalf of Jim with other Vertals as both navigate the world of the Cybersphere; a 24/7 on-line computer world connecting everyone to everything. Everyone uses it, but in order to use it, you need a Vertal.
Somehow, Laura Meyers has learned to exist in the Cybersphere without a Vertal, unfathomable to Jim, Jasper or anyone else at SciPop. But as Jim works the project, he soon discovers there is much more going on in the Cybersphere than SciPop’s acquisition of this small, unassuming business when Jasper suddenly goes missing. Jim discovers SciPop has a much bigger and darker plan for “Laura’s Hikes” than just a simple acquisition of one of the few non-technical companies left in existence. Much more.
Welcome to CyberLife: A weeklong initiation into the cybercentric universe of techno-biologic symbiosis which is considered by all to be perfectly organized, functional, efficient, and effective.
As long as Jim, Laura and Jasper follow the rules and regulations of SciPop.
Which, so far, they have tended not to do very well.

Book Excerpt:

Introduction
I must be dreaming. At least I think I’m dreaming.
Nope. I’m aware of myself lying in bed, so I must be somewhat awake. I glance
over at Clock—0247. I guess that’s good news since I have enough time left to actually
go back to sleep before my usual 0600 go time.
Drifting in and out of sleep can be aggravating. But drifting in and out of real and
dreamlike virtual experiences seems normal to me. Over the past twenty-one years
I’ve become comfortable with my mental and virtual wanderings, and if Clock is
right I have plenty of time to transition back and forth this morning before I activate
my internal motivation gene that will enable me to get up and earn my paycheck.
This little bit of personalized power is enough to keep me satisfied for the moment.
I don’t know if it’s normal, but I can, at least to some degree, orchestrate my
dreams when I’m in this twilight state of mind. I can’t control what my dreams are
about when I’m fully and completely asleep; no one can. But as I lie here in a quasi-
comatose meditative state enjoying a temporary unplugging, I take advantage of my
awesome talent and force the direction that my future dream may take when I do
eventually fall back asleep. Call it a gift .

Thinking of gifts: Lying here in my technology-saturated apartment, I begin to
think of something simple and happy—before I acquired all this character-building
life experience. I guess that’s a gift unto itself, but not something I want to think
about now while looking fuzzily at my darkened ceiling through half-opened eyelids.
I want to think of something better. As I have done many times before, I think
back to my eighteenth birthday, before I was hardwired in to the full-time 24-7-365
business world. Just before I got the gift of all gift s.
Engaging dream control. Disengage fact checking. Memory systems nominal.
Proceed.

Happy birthday, Jimmy.
Thanks for stopping by The Wormhole!
Happy Reading.

Blog Tour: Warriors of Light Series by L.J. DeLeon (Giveaway too!)

This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
You can see the entire tour schedule by clicking HERE.
(Giveaway form located at end of post!)
Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour.
It is my pleasure to feature L.J. DeLeon
and the Warrior's of Light series.
LJ DeLeon Bio:

Bestselling author LJ DeLeon is an Army brat and a world-traveled former CIA Intelligence Analyst who has seen enough of this world to appreciate other worlds. Working for the CIA was great training for writing fantasy, paranormal, and futuristic romance--and understanding the warrior mentality. Amazing how real life and fiction overlap.

WARRIOR’S RISE  (Warriors for Light, Book 1)

For Fae-human half-breed Deva Morgan, life as she knows it changes on her thirtieth birthday. One moment she’s a barkeep, the next she is a warrior fated to save Earth from the Dark Lord and his demon horde. Shunned by both her races, she faces a danger-filled quest with few allies. Too bad her powers haven’t fully emerged or stabilized.

For Deva it is life or death, on-the-job training with her companion, Padraig O’Neal, a Fae warrior with a shadowed past. Can he quiet the storm raging inside her, help her harness the growing power within her, and provide a barrier between Deva and a fatal outcome? Will their love be enough to save Deva and stop the Dark Lord’s demons from entering Earth?

WARRIOR’S RISE Excerpt:

Padraig ignored the snarling werewolf in front of him, the throbbing beat of ‘70’s rock, the whirling of the ceiling fan, and scanned the near-empty bar. No human norms present. Good, it made his job easier, cleaner.
His gaze locked onto the woman behind the aged mahogany counter. She was beautiful, almost ethereal. Strange, considering she was about six feet and all angles. Even her face was a series of planes. Yet it all fit together in a unique, mesmerizing image.
Inhaling, he filtered out the residual odor of norms and their stale cigarette smoke. Her scent of summer with just a hint of wisteria, drew him, enveloped him, singed him with the heat of her presence.
Her bored expression didn’t hide the quick assessing look in her cool hazel eyes, then dismissal.
Damn it to the Abyss. Her icy disdain combined with the unfamiliar pull of her sensuality were complications he did not need.
Not now. Not ever.

DRAGON CHILD (Warriors for Light, Book 2)

A fire-breathing dragon, Moira O'Neal, was exchanged at birth for a Fae princess. Discovering the truth, she escapes the cage of the royal court and joins forces with the sexiest wereleopard on Earth. She fights the urge to mate and the trap that comes with it as they race against time to find the missing princess and a master of the black arts who covets her power.

Major Steve Taylor, a wereleopard in the Army For Light, partners with the impetuous Moira in the middle a dangerous mission where failure means all their deaths. Worse, his leopard decides Moira is his mate, leaving the man at war with his cat.

DRAGON CHILD Excerpt

Never one to ignore a warning, she inched forward, preparing to make her escape. The door opened and Ma entered followed by Major Steve Taylor, a wereleopard visiting from Earth.
Moira shivered at the sight of the tall, lean, hard-muscled warrior’s unflinching moss-green stare. His scent of laurel and crisp mountain air mixed with a hint of musk wafted over her, exciting every nerve ending. It drew her, enveloped her, melted her where she sat. Good thing she’d never gotten this close to him at her brother and Deva’s wedding. She inhaled again. Goddess help her, she would have fallen at his feet and made a fool of herself.
Moira gnawed on her lower lip. What was it about this hard, closed-off Were? What made her look twice at him when no other male triggered her interest?
A second later, a guard in the hall pulled the door shut, sealing them inside.
Moira eased back into her corner and prayed she escaped discovery. They couldn’t see her, but she could observe and hear everything from her location. . . .
He placed a finger to his lips and scanned the room. His eyes phased to those of a leopard, fitting seamlessly into his human face—unblinking, soft grass green with a narrowed black iris. His mouth opened slightly, his tongue pressed against his teeth, as if tasting the air. His head made small abrupt movements, taking in the room.
Moira’s eyes widened at his mouthed, “We aren’t alone.”
She froze as he turned and prowled toward her. Damn his wereleopard nose. She squeezed her eyes shut and prayed to the Goddess with every cell in her being she were invisible.
Goose bumps broke out all over her body. The air in front of her stilled. Nothing moved. Only his scent touched her.
He’d found her.
She opened her eyes and stared into his. Her chest constricted with dread. He stood, fully alert, feet planted directly in front of her. If he’d been in cat form, she suspected his ears would tip forward to catch the slightest breath. Whiskers would twitch, testing for any change in the air.

ABSOLUTION (Warriors for Light, Book 3)

He did the unforgivable. Druid Lucan Woods killed his surrogate father and best friend for the greater good. Wracked with guilt, he infiltrates a brotherhood of evil, hoping the mission is one way. Absolution may come from a missing Fae Princess, if he will accept it. Or will he reject her love and use her as a pawn in his drive to destroy the leader of the brotherhood?

Fae Princess Alanna has just learned her twin daughters are alive. She leaves hIfreann to search Earth for them. Only she can touch Luc’s heart. But will he let her? Will he open his stained soul and allow her to enter in time to save them both?

ABSOLUTION Excerpt

For a short interim, she had felt nothing from him and feared he had succeeded. Then his pain speared her heart and, when she had touched his mind, she learned he had been in Otherworld. That his life and soul survived was a balm. Now, in this room, his self-loathing dominated to a degree she’d never encountered or dealt with in her years as a healer.
His bleak devastation battered at her, driving her to her knees. Unable to bear his oppressive grief, she crawled to him, and curled her hands over his knees, forcing a touch, a rush of compassion, anything to save him. The reason didn’t matter, only the certainty that to do nothing, to allow him to be consumed, would be disastrous for both of them. He would suffer, as would she and her daughters.
He stared at the gun then sighed. “If you’re going to do it, Luc, get it over with.” He placed the weapon in his mouth, aimed up and back. His finger slid off the guard and onto the trigger.
No! She squeezed her fingers hard around his knees. Her hands didn’t pass through his flesh, despite their non-corporeal composition, reassuring her that she had gained complete control over traveling the astral plain.
Waves of energy rushed from her and enveloped him.
He stilled. Slowly he removed the weapon, his finger poised on the trigger.
She moved to the bed and eased behind him to cradle his head between her palms. She bent, her lips to his ear. It wasn’t your fault. Hear me, warrior. Do not burden yourself with this weight.
His gaze searched the room as he raised the weapon toward the door.
This wasn’t your fault.
“Wasn’t my fault? If not mine, then whose?” His voice rasped harsh and raw with pain.
He had heard her. She had time and a link to stop him. One she wouldn’t drop. Never again would she be this close to losing him. Nate’s death was due to manipulation by the parasite inside of him. He was an innocent caught in the crossfire. He would be saddened to have you lose your way like this. Please, I need you.

Review: Oath of Office by Michael Palmer

Oath of Office by Michael Palmer

*I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Amazon Product Description:

February 14, 2012
From the New York Times bestselling author of A Heartbeat Away and The Last Surgeon comes a shocking new novel at the crossroads of politics and medicine.
What if a well respected doctor inexplicably goes on a murderous rampage?
When Dr. John Meacham goes on a shooting spree the office, his business partner, staff, and two patients are killed in the bloodbath.  Then Meacham turns the gun on himself.
The blame falls on Dr. Lou Welcome.  Welcome worked with Meacham years before as a counselor after John's medical license had been revoked for drug addiction.  Lou knew that John was an excellent doctor and deserved to be practicing medicine and fought hard for his license to be restored.  After hearing the news of the violent outburst, Lou is in shock like everyone else, but mostly he's incredulous.  And when he begins to look into it further, the terrifying evidence he finds takes him down a path to an unspeakable conspiracy that seems to lead directly to the White House and those in the highest positions of power.

My thoughts:
This is an incredible story!  The beginning is stunning, gripping, and terrifying.  Once I read the prologue I was hooked.  This is a masterfully crafted story of corruption and greed as well as compassion and the driving belief in doing the right thing.
The characters are wonderfully constructed, each with a complex life and belief system that makes them come alive from the pages.  Lou is fabulous.  His profound sense of right and wrong as well as his willingness to see life from all angles makes him stand out, even among the many well-built characters in this book.  I was impressed with his ability to co-parent with such a supportive and positive attitude after what had to be a heart breaking divorce and a long, hard road to recovery.  He and Cap are both role models that every 12-step program dreams of.
The complex story line and multifaceted plot keep the reader turning the pages, always looking forward to learning one more tidbit in the mystery.  The writing is vivid and imaginative, so much so that you literally "see" the story unfold in your mind in full color.  Joey's "pets" are the stuff of true nightmares; the descriptions alone left me cringing and shaky.
Great characters make a story for me, but this book has it all - great characters (both the "good guys" and the "bad guys", an intriguing mystery, conflict on a number of levels, and a little bit of a romance.  An all around great read.

Guest post by Hildie McQueen:
There is nothing we romance writers and readers love more than, well romance.
When reading historical romances, I dreamed of one day traveling to Scotland and seeing firsthand the magical places where the wonderful stories took place.  I wanted to walk where they walked, stand where battles were fought and receive the gaze of a lover when standing and beholding the wonder of the Highlands. Maybe even catch a glimpse of a Highlander in a Kilt! Me and thousands of others right?
When planning my trip to Scotland, I also planned to fall madly and deeply in love with the country.  Never did I suspect that I’d fall totally head over heels in love with the people, the soul of Scotland.  My eyes mist just at remembering the many warm moments, while my girlfriends and I spent ten days discovering the wonderful city of Edinburgh, traveling from the lowlands to the highlands wishing each moment would stretch indefinitely.
As days passed, each of us crossed an item off our bucket list. Yet I can bet that we would have a terrible time choosing our favorite moment. Was it when stepping up to the anvil where young lovers married in Gretna Green?  Or was it strolling through the beautiful lands of St. Andrews Cathedral or standing in the small chapel at Falkland castle where Mary Queen of Scots worshipped?  Or perhaps it can be measured by our gasps of awe at catching our first glimpses of Eilean Donan Castle, as it stood proud with the misty highland mountains as backdrop.
Oh yes, the Scottish. The Scots are an amazing warm, caring people. Our driver Kenny McLeod, sang to us, “Over the Bridge to Skye,” as he took us to the Isle of Skye. His tenor voice was as engaging as the scenery outside. The young man who carried one of our heavy bags at the train station, without expecting to be thanked was a charmer. We met twenty-one year old Gavin, who sat with us at a pub and entertained us with stories of his exploits.  In the Highland village of Plockton, a small pub band played an American tune for us when we entered the room, the entire room clapping in time with the beat.  Our B&B hosts took us on a private ride on his boat, that included an upclose took at Duncraig castle. The way his wife and he made us feel like family for the duration of our stay is beyond words.
And the piece de’ resistance, the same host taking his boat out on the loch and waving a huge red banner so that when our departing train went by we’d know he wished us farewell.
So dear readers, regain romance, go to Scotland, and come back so in love, that like me your face will lighten when asked.  “How did you like Scotland?”
Of course my answer is.
“I can’t wait to return!”

Desperate Betrayal

Terrified that the Protector will kill her if he realizes what she is, she still goes against every instinct and approaches Cyn for help. Blog Tour: A Dry Creek Bed by Avery Flynn

This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
You can see the entire tour schedule by clicking HERE.
Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour.
It is my pleasure to feature Avery Flynn and
her book A Dry Creek Bed.
How do you want readers to react to the fictional world and its characters that you’ve created?

I hope they want to come visit Dry Creek, Nebraska, have a meal at The Harvest Bistro, eat cinnamon rolls at the bakery on Main Street and hang out with the Laytons. I wouldn’t mind hanging out with the Laytons. I think matriarch Glenda would be a real hoot after you got a glass of wine in her. Hell, what am I talking about. She’s funny totally sober. Then to get to sit in a room with all of the hot Layton brothers? Yep, that would be a good day.

Do you believe the ends justifies the means?

That’s a hard one because it really gets to the heart of the villain’s story for A Dry Creek Bed. The villain has been wronged - I don’t think anyone would disagree with that - and believes revenge is the only way to make things right. However, while in the pursuit of complete revenge, the villain loses sight of reality and the difference between right and wrong. For the villain the ends completely justifies the means - even if the end result is murder.

If you could sit next to any author during a cross-continental flight, who would it be and why?

That is easy - Dakota Cassidy. One, I don’t think she would be too scary to talk to. Two, we could chat endlessly about makeup. Three, her books are so funny, I can’t imagine she wouldn’t crack me up the entire trip while we drank wine and smack talked about the flight crew.

Tell us a little about A Dry Creek Bed.

Gladly! Dry Creek County Sheriff Hank Layton is the stuff of dreams. Nasty, steamy, delicious fantasies that leave Beth Martinez weak-kneed and desperately wanting the man she can never have.

Hank can’t stop thinking about Beth to the point where he’s afraid of becoming permanently bowlegged. And even though the sexual tension between them is thick enough to trip over, she runs every time he chases.

But when a mysterious developer forces her neighbors off their land, Beth becomes the one person standing between the scoundrel and millions of dollars. Only Hank can help her uncover the truth. Together they risk their lives exposing decades-old secrets and learn that everything is not as it seems in their rural Nebraska town.

About the Author:

Avery Flynn, the author of UP A DRY CREEK and A Dry Creek Bed, books one and two in the Dry Creek series set in Nebraska, grew up in a small town in the western part of that state, a far cry from her present day home just outside of Washington, D.C. It was no accident that she went back to her roots for the small town setting for her romantic suspense.

“When I graduated high school,” she says, “I couldn’t cross the state line fast enough. The older I got and the farther I moved away, the more I realized what a wonderful place Nebraska had been to live. I swore I’d set a novel there as a way to give people a look into the amazing folks that live in my home state.”

The name Avery Flynn is a pseudonym for the author who, at least for now, prefers to remain behind the scenes. She believes having Avery as her alter ego is a very good thing because, as she says, “Pen name Avery is way cooler than me. Her favorite color is hot pink. She drinks single malt scotch on the rocks. She loves the Argentinean tango and stays at Iceland’s Ice Hotel.”

Author Avery has been writing since she was a child and her father gave her a baby blue Brother typewriter. She couldn’t read but nonetheless wrote numerous stories about her stuffed animals in gibberish. She hasn’t stopped since, though she maintains that her spelling has gotten much better and she now prefers to write in English.

Today she’s enjoying her own happily ever after with her dashing husband, three crazy kids and two arthritic dogs. She dreams of one day having a floor-to-ceiling library à la Beauty and the Beast and is working to perfect the coffee IV drip.
