2012 TBR Pile Challenge!

This challenge is hosted by Roof Beam Reader.
The Goal: To finally read 12 books from your “to be read” pile (within 12 months).
I participated (and failed miserably at) this challenge in 2011.  Although there are still months left in 2011 - I know that there is no way I can finish my list and have resigned myself to the knowledge that I FAILED at this one, so.....I will try again in 2012.  I have moved many of my 2011 list to my 2012 list in hopes that the coming year will provide me with the opportunity to move them from the TBR stack to the Read and Reviewed stack.  Wish me luck!
Here is my list:
1. The City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
2. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater (have ALL her books, been to two signings and still this series is wasting away on the TBR in hopes of seeing the R & R stack).
3. Fallen by Lauren Kate
4. Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
5. Nightshade by Andrea Cremer
6. Howl's Moving Castle by Diane Wynne Jones
7. Glass Houses by Rachel Caine
8. Betrayed by P. C. Cast
9. Chosen by P. C. Cast
10. Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton
11. Vesper by Jeff Sampson
12. The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter (another FAILED challenge read)

Deadly Pursuit: Blood Hunter Book 2 by Nina Croft

Amazon Product Description:
Breaking assassin Jonathon Decker out of a maximum security prison on Trakis One seemed like a good idea at the time. Now, pursued across space by the two most powerful factions in the universe, the crew of El Cazador are having second thoughts. They'd like to give him back. Unfortunately, that no longer seems an option.
Jon is used to working alone. Now, he's stuck on the space cruiser El Cazador until he can work out just what he's supposed to know that puts him on everybody's most-wanted-dead list. He s not happy that the crew includes a runaway priestess with designs on his virtue such as it is. Jon likes women, but he gave up the role of protector a long time ago, and Alexia, High Priestess of the Church of Everlasting Life, is an accident waiting to happen.
After twenty-four excruciatingly boring years of doing her duty, Alex is finally having some fun. She never meant to run away it was a rash impulse and she means to go back eventually. But first, she's going to squeeze enough excitement out of the situation to last her a lifetime. And what could be more exciting than a stunningly gorgeous werewolf?
Meanwhile, the Church are chasing their missing priestess, and the Collective are pursuing their escaped assassin. Being hunted has never been more deadly...or more fun.

Welcome to The Wormhole and my day with Nina Croft and Deadly Pursuit!

Nina Croft grew up in the north of England. After training as an accountant, she spent four years working as a volunteer in Zambia which left her with a love of the sun and a dislike of 9-5 work. She then spent a number of years mixing travel (whenever possible) with work (whenever necessary) but has now settled down to a life of writing and picking almonds on a remote farm in the mountains of southern Spain.

And now for your reading pleasure...an excerpt!
Prologue:
Twenty-four years ago...
A pair of sickle moons hung low in the sky, casting a sullen, bloodred glow insufficient to light the path. High priest Hezrai Fischer swore under his breath as he tripped over a tree root and only just prevented himself from sprawling on the ground in an undignified heap.
     "How much further?" he snapped.
"Not far now, my Lord," the guide murmured soothingly. He'd been saying the same words for the last hour.
The procession wound its way up a steep track cut into the side of a mountain, on what had to be the most godforsaken planet in the known universe. Sweat soaked his robes, and every muscle ached from the unusual exercise. "Why here?" he asked the world in general. "Why couldn't she have been born on some nice, civilized planet?"
"God works in mysterious ways," Sister Martha spoke softly from beside him.
     Sanctimonious bitch.
He gritted his teeth as the words hovered on his lips. Personally, he would have preferred a little less mystery and a little more common sense from God. Biting back the blasphemous thought, he peered sideways at his companion. She had no trouble maneuvering up the track, seeming to glide in her long, black robes. her face was serene; only the subdued glow in her eyes hinted at her excitement.
Left to him, he would have chosen a different companion. Sister Martha always set his teeth on edge, but as the head of the Order of the Sisters of Everlasting Life, it would be her duty to take charge of the new priestess. He hadn't been able to think of a reasonable excuse to leave her behind.
The old High Priestess had died a month ago. They had immediately sent out seekers to all the inhabited planets to search for the new vessel; a baby girl born at the exact moment of the old priestess's death into whom the holy spark would have been transferred.
     "We're here, my Lord."
"Here" appeared to be a tiny hovel. Dull orange light flickered from the single window. He smoothed his robes, raised his fist, and banged on the wooden door.
It was opened seconds later by one of the brothers. "My Lord."
Hezrai nodded brusquely. "They know we are coming? Have they agreed?"
"Yes, my Lord. For one thousand credits, they will hand over the child."
"They should hand her over for the glory of the Church," he snarled.
"They are not members, my Lord, but they are poor."
Hezrai detected a slight censure in the words; he'd ignore it for now, but made a mental note of the man's name. "Let's get this over with."
He followed the brother into the house, though 'house' was an ambitious word for the single, dingy space he found himself in. The air held a sharp, sour smell, and he wrinkled his nose.
At the far side of the room, a man and a woman huddled together. The man held a baby in his arms.
"At last," Hezrai muttered. Perhaps now they could finish this and get back to civilization. he stepped closer and peered down at the baby. He didn't know much about babies, and wasn't sure what he'd been expecting, but some sense of holiness at the very least.
"Are we sure?" It was an ugly, little thing with a squashed up face, strange gray eyes rimmed with black, and a shock of dark red hair. Hezrai frowned. "Has there ever been a red-haired priestess?"
"Not that I remember." Sister Martha sounded dubious. "Can we see the sign?"
The father parted the robes. A purple birthmark showed clearly on her right thigh in the perfect shape of a cross.
Hezrai nodded. It was enough for him. "Make the transfer."
He waited, tapping his foot on the rough wood floor, trying to ignore the stench of the place. Finally, the transaction was complete. "Right then...Get the girl and let's go."
The parents hadn't said a word, but now the mother stepped forward. "Please, I don't - "
Her husband halted her with a hand on her arm. "Shut up, Lisa. There'll be other babies."
     "But - "
"We discussed this. What sort of life will she have here? With the Church, she'll have a chance - a future."
Hezrai rolled his eyes. Yeah, right, they were doing this for the infant, nothing to do with the thousand credits. he really hoped the woman wasn't going to be difficult. Before she could say another word, the man edged closer to Hezrai and shoved the baby into his arms.
     Hezrai almost dropped it.
Now he knew where the disgusting smell was coming from. Staring down into its red face, he tried to feel some religious awe. This was the High Priestess returned to them. She blinked at him from intense gray eyes, screwed up her features, and screamed, nearly bursting his eardrums.
"Quiet, child." He made an effort to keep his voice even. If he gave in to his natural inclination and screamed back, he suspected it would do more harm than good.
     She shrieked louder.
"Give her to me." Sister Martha held out her arms.
A second ago, he would have gladly handed her over; now that the sister had asked, he tightened his grip and gritted his teeth. "The child belongs to God now. She must learn obedience."
The baby quieted, her lips curving into a sweet smile.
"There, you see, she just needs discipline."
She opened her mouth and regurgitated vile smelling, half-digested milk down his pristine black robe.
That was the moment Hezrai Fischer began to hate the brand new High Priestess of the Church of Everlasting Life.
Intrigued?  Don't miss out on this one!

Review: Forged in Fire by Trish McCallan

Forged in Fire by Trish McCallan

Amazon Product Description:
Beth Brown doesn’t believe in premonitions until she dreams a sexy stranger is gunned down during the brutal hijacking of a commercial airliner. When events in her dream start coming true, she heads to the flight’s departure gate. To her shock, she recognizes the man she’d watched die the night before.

Lieutenant Commander Zane Winters comes from a bloodline of elite warriors with psychic abilities. When Zane and two of his platoon buddies arrive at Sea-Tac Airport, he has a vision of his teammates’ corpses. Then she arrives—a leggy blonde who sets off a different kind of alarm.

As Beth teams up with Zane, they discover the hijacking is the first step in a secret cartel’s deadly global agenda and that key personnel within the FBI are compromised. To survive the forces mobilizing against them, Beth will need to open herself to a psychic connection with the sexy SEAL who claims to be her soul mate.  (Winner of the 2010 Launching a Star Contest, romantic suspense category).
My thoughts:
Love this book!  Finished reading it saying, "NOOOOOOOOOO! It can't be the end!"
Trish McCallan has created fantastic characters!  If there were really men out there like these we would all spend all our time searching and get absolutely nothing done in our lives.  The women are no less fabulous.  Zane is the kind of man we all want to meet and Beth is the woman we all secretly hope we could be.  The characters are strong, driven, dedicated, family oriented, everything you look for that makes you never want the story to end.
The plot is intriguing and clever, suspenseful and action packed.  She is truly a storyteller at heart.  The story is well-written and wonderfully paced.  The pages fly by filled with budding romance, violence, terrorists, kidnapping, betrayal,  friendship, desire and fear.
I am so excited to have found such a great author and I can't wait for the next book in this series!  You don't want to miss this one!

Watching the Paranormal Walls Come Tumbling Down

I can’t hate the Twilight series. The success of the first movie directly spawned True Blood and the Vampire Diaries. The book series is a big reason why the Paranormal genre went from a niche to a juggernaut.

It wasn’t always like this. And I remember the pre Twilight years only too well.

I was a semi-finalist in the Austin Teleplay contest. It was a major event for amateur screenwriters. I was invited to the festival and had one on one access to people like producer Barry Josephson. I was having a great time. Then I talked to one of the top TV agents in LA. TV is a hard game. You have to have an agent who specializes in teleplays otherwise they won’t even look at your work. And the top TV agencies don’t read unsolicited manuscripts so winning a major contest is one of the few ways you can get your screenplays read at a major agency. I was having a pretty good conversation with this agent and I was very hopeful. She asked me which show my spec script was for. I answered, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Nope, sorry. They weren’t going to read it. They weren’t going to even look at it.

I stood there with my jaw hanging open for a few seconds while I tried to process her response. I knew Buffy wasn’t a ratings winner, but she responded with such open contempt for the show. It had been critically acclaimed. It had a ravenous fan base. Yet none of that meant anything. It was persona non grata or script non grata as far the other showrunners were concerned. She suggested I do something like CSI instead. Or maybe Monk. That’s what all the tough showrunners around town were watching. Not stuff for teenage girls.

Well, that put my TV writing career on hold for a bit. I tried meekly to defend my beloved show but the hardened and serious professional was having none of it. No joy for Buffy. No joy for me.

One hit movie later and things changed. A lot. Sure CSI is still king of the ratings but I don’t think anyone would scoff at a Supernatural or a True Blood spec script. Now a smart, well written paranormal series is just another TV show.

Maybe you viewed that Buffy vs. Edward video a hundred times. Maybe your vampires burn in the sunlight rather than sparkle. But things were very, very different for the genre before Twilight. Now if you make it to the finals of a major screenplay contest with a True Blood spec the agents there will take you seriously.
Excerpt of From Russia with Blood:
Instantly he was right next to her. One hand gripped her shoulder and yanked her backward. His other hand held something that flashed brightly. There was a loud echoing sound.
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Gunfire. He’s got a gun!
Larissa stumbled away from Ian. She saw the speeding auto tear down the center of the road. It swerved toward her as she ran.
There was a dark alley immediately behind her. She sprinted into it. It looked narrow. She didn’t think a car could follow. She hoped it couldn’t.
She was ten steps down the alley when she heard a huge crash behind her. She felt it too and half stumbled for a few steps. Larissa whipped her head around and saw the car with its hood crumpled around the corner of the alley. The headlights were flickering and the horn blared.
She slowed a little bit. The car horn stopped blaring. The driver’s side door opened with a crunch and a large man in a dark suit kicked his way out. He staggered into the mouth of the alley clutching his forehead. Larissa saw blood oozing from a cut on his scalp. Then she saw the gun in his other hand. The man raised it at her.
She stood frozen. Was this it? The moment her dreams had warned her about?
Pop! Pop! Pop!
It was the same sound as before. Sharp and loud like fireworks on the Fourth of July. The man hadn’t fired. He stumbled and then fell awkwardly to the ground. She’d never seen a dead body before but she knew that man was dead. He lay in such a twisted manner there could be no doubt.
A shadow approached the alley.
Larissa tore herself from the spot and ran.
She looked back once and saw a tall figure enter the alley. She was on the verge of recognizing him when she smacked into something large and heavy.
Two burly men had jumped out of the shadows and she had run right into their arms. She screamed with all her might as they lifted her off the ground. She kicked and flailed around.
“Is this her?” asked one man in a rough voice.
“Who cares. Shut her up!” came the answer.
A hand like sandpaper clamped down over her mouth and smothered her screams. She saw the black metal of a gun barrel. It hovered above her forehead. She bit down hard on the hand but it wouldn’t let go, even as her teeth tore through the skin.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw the tall figure streaking down the alley toward them. It was Ian. He was moving faster than any man she’d ever seen. It didn’t seem real. She’d been to the Central Park Zoo once. There she’d seen a snow leopard dash across its enclosure. It moved so fast and so fluid, like lightning. That was what it was like watching Ian move. There was nothing human about it.
Her attackers dropped her. She fell on her butt as Ian collided with the two of them like a train. There was a flurry of blows. One dropped to the ground. He crumpled like the man at the mouth of the alley and Larissa knew he was dead.
She backed away from the fight. Broken glass and other bits of debris scraped and cut her hands and rear end but she barely noticed. She was too busy watching the fight. What little fight there was.
Ian seized the other man. The brute was nearly twice his size but Ian held him tight and forced him to his knees. They were standing over a sodium lamp and by its pale light she saw the fangs gleaming inside Ian’s mouth.

About the author:

Micheal J Lee was born in the Midwest and has spent time out on the East Coast and in LA.  He learned the craft of screenwriting the hard way, as a barely paid reader. That’s how he got a good feel for writing form and the craft of storytelling. His approach to a story is a lot like Bruce Lee's approach to fighting, absorb what is useful.

Lee published his first paranormal romance, My Frankenstein, recently. It's been an adventure – and now he’s on to book 2, From Russia with Blood.

Blog Tour: Forged in Fire by Trish McCallan

This virtual book tour is presented by Bewitching Book Tours.
Click HERE to see the entire tour schedule.
Welcome to The Wormhole and my day on the tour!
It is with great pleasure that I present
Trish McCallan!
?When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? The first time my mother read me a bedtime story.
? How long does it take you to write a book? My first book took me eight months. My second took me eight years. I learned the craft of writing on that second book. I must have completely rewritten it, first sentence to last, at least eight times. Not one sentence from the original draft remains in the finished product. My last book took me a year to write. I’m hoping to drop the timeframe down to eight months on the current WIP.
? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk? That my most productive time of the day is from 4 am until 7 am. But I need a nice hot shower and lots of coffee to wake me up.
? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write? Yes, I turn my internet off, and lock myself in my office.
? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters? Forged in Fire came from a dream, The Cat’s Meow came from the nightly news and Yesterday’s Child came from a newspaper article.
? How do you decide what you want to write about? I choose the project that consumes me the most. I dropped The Cat’s Meow even though I had the first draft down and was halfway through revisions because I couldn’t get the storyline or characters for Forged in Fire out of my mind. I’m hoping to pick The Cat’s Meow back up again after I finish Forged in Ice, the second book in the Forged series.
? What books have most influenced your life? Linda Howard and JR Ward’s books have influenced me the most.
? What is the first book you remember reading by yourself? The Black Stallion.
? What are you reading right now? Never Cry Wolf, by Cynthia Eden
? What do you like to do when you are not writing? Gardening has become a great joy for me since I bought my house.
? What is your favorite comfort food? French Toast
? What do you think makes a good story? Strong, well defined characters. It always boils down to the characters for me.
? Who would you consider your favorite author and why? Guy Gavriel Kay, because his books are so emotionally haunting. I remember them in detail years after I have read them.
? What book, if any, do you read over and over again? Mackenzie’s Mountain by Linda Howard, The wedding and The Secret by Julie Garwood, Dark Lover by JR WARD.
Fun random questions:
·        dogs or cats? Both, and way too many of each.
·        Coffee or tea? Coffee, but only with French Vanilla Creamer
·        Dark or milk chocolate? Milk Chocolate with whip cream
·        Rocks or flowers? Flowers! Everywhere.
·        Night or day? Day, Morning  preferably.
·        Favorite color? Deep, rich purple
·        Crayons or markers? Markers
·        Pens or pencils? Pens

****What did I think of this book???  FANTASTIC!  I truly enjoyed Forged In Fire!  The characters are wonderfully created, the plot is action packed, fast paced, and cleverly creative.  The book is well written.  I found it hard to put down even for a minute or two!
