Welcome to The Wormhole and my stop on the Bleeder Tour!
Please welcome L.K. Rigel!!!

LK Rigel lives in California with her cat, Coleridge. She was once a singing waitress, scored the independent science fantasy karate movie Lucid Dreams, and was a reporter for the Sacramento Rock 'N Roll News. Her BA is in humanities and religious studies. Her work has appeared in Literary Mama and Tattoo Highway. Her short story "Slurp" will appear in Anne Frasier's 2011 Halloween anthology Deadly Treats published by Nodin Press.

...and now to satisfy our nosy side...the interview!

? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I was in seventh grade, my teacher read one of my creative writing assignments aloud to the class and then said “That is a writer!” I’ve never gotten over the thrill, and I’ve been writing ever since.
? How many jobs did you have before you became a writer?
I’ve been a singing waitress, a newspaper reporter, a professional singer in a band, and a court reporter.
? How long does it take you to write a book?
I’m not sure I have a good answer. As an example, the novella Space Junque, which is about 112 pages, took about four months to write. Bleeder, about 428 pages, took over a year.
? What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
I come up with weird titles – then I fall in love with them! I tried to get rid of Space Junque and briefly retitled it Hero Material. I never got over it and always called the book Space Junque anyway. Fortunately (for me), when I ran a poll on my website, 80% of readers wanted the Space Junque title back.
? Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?
I make a latte and reread the work from the day before, and then I’m good to go.
? Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
I like to quote the movie Joe Versus the Volcano: “Let me tell you something about art. It comes from somewhere….” In other words, I don’t know!
? How do you decide what you want to write about?
Before I published, I listened to the characters in my head. They’re always vying for my attention, wanting their stories told. (I’m not crazy, I promise!) That still happens, but now I also pay attention to reviews and comments from readers. I wrote Spiderwork because readers wanted to know more about what happened to Char and Jake and Durga.
? What books have most influenced your life?
So many! Grimm’s and Perrault’s fairytales, the Childcraft children’s books, Michener’s Hawaii, Brautigan’s A Confederate General From Big Sur, Friedman’s Who Wrote the Bible?, Fromm’s The Art of Loving.
? What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Read, of course! Embarrassingly, I love to watch television, series like True Blood, Game of Thrones, The Tudors and Big Love. But mostly in my spare time I work out, volunteer at the hospital, and tend my prize-winning roses , .
? What is your favorite comfort food?
Quad venti no foam latte
? What do you think makes a good story?
When I can’t figure out how the heroine or hero is going to get what they want – and then the author surprises me.
? Who would you consider your favorite author and why?
A.S. Byatt. She’s brilliant and fearless in her writing.
? What book, if any, do you read over and over again?
Possession, by A.S. Byatt.
Fun random questions:
  • dogs or cats?  cats

  • Dark or milk chocolate? dark
  • Rocks or flowers? flowers
  • Night or day? night
  • Favorite color? red – no, green!

I like dogs, don't get me wrong! But Coleridge (my kitty) thinks he's my evil overlord, and I can't find it in my heart to destroy the illusion.

Thanks so much for hosting Bleeder, Beverly! I hope it's okay to mention that The Worm Hole's trivia question (for a chance to win a $100 Amazon or B&N gift card) is right here. And the answer can be found here
