It is my pleasure to feature Jade Kerrion
and her Double Helix Series.
Jade has joined me for an interview:
? How long does
it take you to write a book?
If I’m really focused, I can probably put in about 2,000 words a
day. So, depending on the length of the novel I can finish a first draft in
about two months. It’ll usually take another month after that to finish my
revisions and get input from a beta reader. If all goes well, I’ll be able to
turn it over to my editor three months after starting the novel.
? What would you
say is your most interesting writing quirk?
I write the movie I see in my mind. Sometimes, I’ll even act out
the scene (never in front of any witnesses, of course…)
? Where do you
get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?
The women in my novels tend to reflect facets of me. I try not
to put them all into a single character—it might give too much away. *smiles* The
men are often more interesting. I draw my inspiration from men I admire,
including my husband. Once again, all you see are facets, never the whole. I
enjoy mixing and matching.
? How do you
decide what you want to write about?
I typically have a sense of the key themes in the story, but the
characters usually define the direction of the story. For example, in the
Double Helix series, I’d first thought that the protagonist would be Galahad,
but as the story evolved, it became clear that Danyael was the protagonist and
that the series, for a time, would tell his story.
As
for the themes, I use my novels to pose questions that I don’t necessarily have
answers for. I’m as much a seeker as my readers. I guess we’re all looking for
the answers to the tough questions. For example, the Double Helix tackles the
issues of equality in the face of unequal talents, the question of “nature”
versus “nurture”, and the age-old question of what actually makes us human.
? What books
have most influenced your life?
Many of David Eddings’ early work, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series,
Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s series.
? What is the
first book you remember reading by yourself?
Goldilocks and the Three Bears!
? What are you
reading right now?
I’m trying to muster the energy to read Game of Thrones. I’ve
heard all kinds of good things about it, but psychologically, I look at the
thickness of the book and panic. Given the kind of time constraints on my day,
I’ve tended toward books that I can finish in a single sitting. Fortunately,
I’m a fast reader, but I’m not so fast that I can finish Game of Thrones in a
single read.
? What do you
like to do when you are not writing?
Well, I work full-time and I have two young children—six years
old and three and a half years old. I also have a husband who doesn’t
necessarily act a whole lot more mature than the six year old. So, what do I
like to do when I’m not writing? Well, I try to keep the rest of my life
running. It’s not as hard as it sounds. My husband is an incredible partner and
my children are adorable, even when they’re being difficult.
? What is your
favorite comfort food?
Most kinds of noodles; udon, ramen, you name it, I usually adore
it.
? What do you
think makes a good story?
Tension and conflict. You don’t have to write a fight scene to
introduce tension and conflict into the story; many relationships are naturally
laden with conflict. Readers intuitively keep reading because they want to know
how the tension will resolve. Hence, the best stories, the ones that keep
readers turning pages, are loaded with tension, and just as one conflict
resolves, another one usually starts up.
? Who would you
consider your favorite author and why?
I love Neil Gaiman, especially his Sandman series. I love the
way he weaves reality and mythology from a variety of sources into a seamless
whole. It’s so flawlessly put together. At first, you see only the threads,
many of which do not seem to make sense, but at the end, it always comes
together in a breathtaking tapestry of stunning complexity.
? What book, if
any, do you read over and over again?
I’ve read David Eddings’ Belgariad and Mallorean series
countless times. I can’t even really explain why I adore those novels so much.
It is a classic coming of age story, with amusing and charming characters that
stick with you even when the story is done. I’ve found great quotes from those
books for many occasions in my life. For whatever reason, those novels have
really stuck with me.

Dogs or cats? Dogs!

Coffee or tea? Neither. I vote for hot chocolate, topped with
whipped cream and shaved chocolate

Dark or milk chocolate? Both, and as much of them as possible.

Rocks or flowers? Uh…flowers, but my kids keep bringing me
rocks.

Night or day? Both. I need all 24 hours to do all the stuff I
need to do.

Favorite color? Black. It’s slimming.
·
Crayons or markers? Either, as long as it’s washable. (Kids, you
know…)
·
Pens or pencils? Once again, washable (or erasable) is the key
here…
