Author book blurb:
Four worlds. Four ages. Four struggles through deserts, demons, criminal underworlds and overwhelming odds. Elian searches for answers to the mysterious blackouts, led forward by his only clue: an encoded diary. Ben stalks the streeets at night in search of horrific creatures not of this world. Alexander hunts down criminals, always intent on doing the right thing whatever the cost. And Prometheus tries to save his village without dying in the process.
Separate but intertwined, they press on, linked somehow to the mysterious John, who watches and waits - for it seems each of the four is part of something much greater than they could ever have imagined.
My thoughts:
This was a different book than what I traditionally read. Although I enjoyed each of the individual stories as they unfolded, I spent the majority of my time being somewhat confused about how or why they would ever be connected.
The characters in each piece of the story were interesting to read about. The idea of fighting for your beliefs, which is the idea I found in each part of the story, is something I can truly get behind.
The only connection between the characters is the suddenly appearing, yet completely unexplored or explained tattoo. It appears and that leads the reader to the conclusion that the characters bearing said tattoo will somehow all be a part of something bigger than themselves, but you never learn what that something is.
Perhaps I was not reading closely enough to follow what the author had provided in the book, and I feel that perhaps if I had realized going in that this was a series in which the conclusion would be found only in the last book, it would have made a difference. But I found myself abruptly at the end of the book with an epilogue that gave no closure.
I tell my students all the time that there are so many kinds of books because there are so many kinds of people, this one might be just what you are looking for...
